Carabao Cup draw LIVE!

Manchester United, Newcastle, Southampton and Nottingham Forest have discovered their opponents in the semi-finals of the 2022-23 Carabao Cup.

The Saints dismissed a poor Manchester City side by a 2-0 scoreline earlier tonight as Sekou Mara and Moussa Djenepo hit fine first-half goals. Last night, Manchester United edged Charlton after Marcus Rashford’s late brace and an Antony stunner.

Newcastle will fancy their chances under Eddie Howe after putting Leicester out of the Carabao Cup last night. A tense penalty shootout win put Forest in the hat as they beat Wolves at the City Ground. The two-legged ties will be played on the weeks of January 23 and 30.

21:45 , Marc Mayo

87 mins: Mighty header clear by Lyanco before another cross is repelled.

21:41 , Marc Mayo

84 mins: They’re heading for penalties in Nottingham Forest vs Wolves as Lyanco hacks clear another City ball in at St Mary’s.

21:39 , Marc Mayo

83 mins: A debut for Croatian winger Orsic, on for Armstrong.

21:37 , Marc Mayo

21:35 , Marc Mayo

78 mins: Alvarez slides into Gundogan’s cross and can only narrowly toe a shot goalwards, the ball diverting off Salisu for Bazunu to clutch off his line.

We’re in for a big finish! Southampton still 2-0 up but Diallo booked.

GOA-NO!

21:33 , Marc Mayo

Southampton come forward and Adams rolls it home... offside.

The away team need a goal soon...

21:24 , Marc Mayo

67 mins: A positive spell for Southampton, Walker-Peters firing a cross-shot through the six-yard box that caught the offside Adams on his heels.

Ward-Prowse next to launch a ball forward and City struggle to clear.

21:22 , Marc Mayo

21:17 , Marc Mayo

The home fans liked that!

However, Lavia is down now. He’s off for Elyounoussi while Adam replaces Mara.

21:14 , Marc Mayo

56 mins: It’s Haaland time!

The Norwegian replaces Grealish, so two up front for City or will Alvarez go wide?

Southampton bring Perraud on for Djenepo.

21:11 , Marc Mayo

54 mins: Djenepo is down after bouncing off Grealish off the ball. Nothing in that, really, but the physio is called on.

21:10 , Marc Mayo

44 mins: Ward-Prowse picks Phillips’ pocket and very nearly launches a counter-attack but it’s all City as the break approaches.

20:42 , Marc Mayo

41 mins: Foden’s corner just about sums City’s first half up, just a touch inaccurate and all the way out for a Southampton throw-in.

20:38 , Marc Mayo

GGOOOAALLL!!! Southampton 1-0 Man City

20:23 , Marc Mayo

22 mins: MARA!

That’s a much better finish!

Moreno has to come out his box to clear and a sloppy piece of play follows before a cute ball into Mara is taken in the striker’s stride.

Just the one chance each in the early exchanges.

Southampton chance!

20:09 , Marc Mayo

8 mins: Caleta-Car throws a foot at a bouncing ball and Ortega parries away what was a dangerous strike!

Good stuff from Southampton.

20:07 , Marc Mayo

6 mins: Just wide from Gundogan as Salisu allows Foden to steal in, before Palmer races clear and the German plants a side-footed effort wide from 18 yards.

Around the grounds

A Boly goal against his old club has Nottingham Forest ahead against Wolves in the other quarter-final.

20:04 , Marc Mayo

3 mins: Southampton on the front foot early but Armstrong’s ricochet concedes a corner and, despite a header out, Saints are forced to sit back against some City possession.

20:03 , Marc Mayo

2 mins: As expected, Walker at centre-back for Man City in pale green and black, against Southampton in white and black with a bit of red. Not a great kit pairing.

19:44 , Marc Mayo

“It’s one of the best teams in the world, a real tough challenge but we have to embrace it.

“We’ll take a result but we’d love a performance and a result.”

Pep Guardiola discusses his selection on Sky Sports

19:38 , Marc Mayo

“We are still alive in everything and we need everyone, [Phillips] can play and understand. I’ve done all through my career, I’ve used everyone. In the second half [the subs] will get some minutes. It’s a normal back four.”

Last time they met

A fairly standard 4-0 win at the Etihad back in October.

Full debut for Phillips

19:29 , Marc Mayo

It seems a long time ago that Kalvin Phillips signed for Man City (because it was).

Finally, tonight he makes his first start for the club.

“He's always ready,” said Pep Guardiola ahead of the game.

“Of course he needed time for some aspects but he’s ready and we are delighted about that.

“We have to see [if he will start] but I think he's an intelligent player, normally holding midfielders are so clever. There are patterns and movements and you need game time.

“He arrived and had injuries which meant he couldn’t be there but step by step he will get there.”

Reinforcements for Southampton

19:25 , Marc Mayo

The club have just confirmed Carlos Alcaraz’s signing from Racing of Argentina - although he will not be making his debut tonight!

Nathan Jones may have claimed an FA Cup win at Crystal Palace on the weekend but he shuffles his pack tonight.

Out go Romain Perraud, Ainsley Maitland-Niles, Che Adams, Joe Aribo and Samuel Edozie.

Replacing them are Moussa Djenepo, Ibrahima Diallo, Sekou Mara, Kyle Walker-Peters and Romeo Lavia as they got to five at the back,

Subs: Ederson, Ake, Haaland, Rodrigo, De Bruyne, Bernardo, Akanji, Mahrez, Lewis.

How will City line up?

18:57 , Marc Mayo

Pep Guardiola teased a “ridiculous” plan for the weekend’s Manchester derby so what will that mean for this game?

He said: “The [Cup] game against Chelsea I made a lot of changes for one reason: how tired I saw some players after the game [in London], after the trip.

“We arrived too late back and in the training the day after I saw the players tired. It also depends on those who didn’t play against Chelsea.

“I would like to arrive against United with the average of minutes in the legs of the players quite similar.”
