Manchester United are less than a week away from yet another new era and the pressure on this one is perhaps more than any since Sir Alex Ferguson.

Yes, this was likely said before Erik ten Hag arrived, and even perhaps Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, but considering the position United sit in the table and the new regime in the boardroom, the appointment of Ruben Amorim needs to work. In some respects, the 39-year-old is an unknown quantity particularly as few English football fans regularly tune in to watch anything in Liga Portugal.

However, United fans will have tuned in, in their droves, to watch Amorim bid farewell to Lisbon against his new, fiercest rivals Manchester City. What they will have witnessed was a demolition job as Sporting's players rose to the occasion to thrash Pep Guardiola's out-of-sorts team.

It was not straightforward though; City dominated in the first half and could have been ahead by more when Viktor Gyokeres equalised just before the break. Any other team may have decided to count their blessings and sit back after restoring parity, but not Amorim's men.

They turned the screw in a wild 42 seconds of play which ended with Sporting 3-1 up. Gyokeres completed his hat-trick late on from the penalty spot to send Amorim off into the sunset on a high.

But while Lisbon was losing its mind as City were put to the sword, Amorim did not relent. Yes, he allowed himself a brief moment to celebrate but straight afterwards he was back to his tactics board ensuring that his team kept the advantage.

This is in stark contrast to what we have seen from many United managers. Ruud van Nistelrooy nearly did a lap of Old Trafford after Bruno Fernandes scored his penalty against Chelsea on Sunday - this celebration proved premature.

Amorim was rather emotionless until the final whistle blew - at which point he was happy to celebrate. He was accused of not caring last Friday when he went straight down the tunnel following a 4-1 victory over Estrela da Amadora but that assessment was unfair.

The new head coach at United clearly cares deeply but he will no doubt prove the old adage of not getting too high after a win, nor too low after a defeat true during his tenure at Old Trafford. Some of the best managers in the world are passionate on the touchline so it's easy to forgive Van Nistelrooy for his behaviour.

But perhaps United need a level head in the dugout especially when the chaos of this great club takes over - and the signs against City were that Amorim may well be able to handle things even when it does.
