I spotted why AFC Bournemouth were angry with VAR after Arsenal defeat and they were right

Dominic Solanke fouls Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya

Former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Jermaine Jenas insists AFC Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola is right to feel aggrieved after the Cherries were denied a goal in the second half against Arsenal.

The Gunners were fully in control and cruising to victory with less than 20 minutes to go thanks to Bukayo Saka's penalty and Leandro Trossard's strike. However, the visitors felt they saw a perfectly legal goal ruled out by the officials.

Referee David Coote chose to award a free kick to Arsenal after Dominic Solanke appeared to nudge goalkeeper David Raya. However, Iraola argued that his midfielder Philip Billing was fouled before the free kick incident and the ball went into the back of the net.

"They had two chances [to get it right]," the Spaniard said after the match. "You have got the penalty to Philip Billing before the goal or he just gives the goal.

"I think what you cannot do is call the foul from Dominic Solanke. The penalty for Philip Billing happens just in front of them and then afterwards that foul (Solanke’s) is much softer and I don’t understand it because I have been watching and I am thinking it is a penalty or a goal."

Analysing the incident on Match of the Day, Jenas agreed with the Bournemouth head coach and admitted Arsenal had been lucky. "The disallowed goal, I think they are very fortunate here Arsenal on numerous occasions," he said.

"I don’t think there is anywhere near enough contact from Solanke on Raya. Both feet are on the floor from Raya there so it is not like he is in the air.

"There is not enough contact and he just miscues his punch. But the bigger issue is the contact from [William] Saliba on Philip Billing.

"Pulling his shirt, pulling him down and this is why you saw Iraola going over to the fourth officials saying: ‘He is pulling him.’ They got away with one but all in all Arsenal were brilliant and deserved the win."
