Steve Cooper drops tantalising hint over Manchester United breakthrough with ‘it’s coming’ claim
Steve Cooper teased a potential rise in prominence for Boubakary Soumare as the Leicester City midfielder once again tries to turn flashes of quality into consistent performances.
Cooper described Soumare’s role in City’s equaliser at Ipswich as “amazing”, the Frenchman charging back to win possession, then bulldozing past another man before laying the ball to scorer Jordan Ayew. It marked a second successive promising outing for the 25-year-old, who impressed with his progressive play in the cup defeat to Manchester United last week.
So often during his career at City, Soumare has built excitement with periods or moments of supreme ability, only to then be incapable of following them up. It means, more than three years on from his £17m transfer from Lille, he’s still viewed as a City flop by many supporters.

However, Cooper hinted that he foresees a bright future for Soumare. There is now talk that he could get his first Premier League start of the season at Manchester United this Sunday.
Speaking about Soumare’s cameo at Ipswich, Cooper: “It was a big impact. It’s coming. Maybe the less said the better really. We see what he has. It’s good that he showed it this week. I’m pleased for him, he deserves it.”
Lapses in concentration when defending and a lack of consistency have been Soumare’s issues since joining City, albeit he did win good reviews for his performances on loan at Sevilla last season. Cooper said he watched back some of the midfielder’s La Liga displays prior to joining City.
The key, he says, is being ready to take opportunities when they come. Soumare has done that over the past two games, and may now be a contender when City head to Old Trafford on Sunday.
Cooper said last week, before the draw with Ipswich: “You do your due diligence and Bouba wasn’t here last season, so in prep for coming in, the games I watched were him at Sevilla. You’ve also got to deal with what you see.
“His opportunities, like a few in the squad, have been few and far between. All players can do really is what Bouba did last Wednesday and take opportunities when they’re given them. If they do that in training and in games, then more opportunities come their way and that’s how you get yourself into teams and stay in teams.
“He’s very much part of the group. He’s obviously not a new face to the guys. He’s been registered here for a few years. We’re enjoying working with him, we’ll continue to work with him. It’s a good example of what can happen if you stay ready for your opportunities.”
