Steven Gerrard sees Rangers return murmur escalated by Celtic sparring partner as trick from Parkhead playbook pitched
Title-winning Rangers boss Steven Gerrard has been tipped to make a return to Ibrox by former Celtic foe Neil Lennon.
The Liverpool legend is facing mounting pressure over his position at Al-Ettifaq amid a seven game winless run leaving the club languishing in 12th spot in the Saudi Pro League. It follows on from a disappointing spell at Aston Villa that saw Gerrard shown the door after just 11 months in the hot seat - but Lennon reckons the boss is still held in high regard by the Premiership side after steering the Light Blues to the title in 2021.
The surge toward the Scottish crown proved costly for then-Celtic boss Lennon as the collapse of the Hoops' bid for 10 consecutive league titles led to the end of his second spell as boss. Current Ibrox boss Philippe Clement is facing questions over his future having gone into the international break nine points behind Celtic and Aberdeen at the top of the table - but back-to-back domestic wins over Motherwell in the Premier Sports Cup semi-final and Hearts in the league with a Europa League point against Olympiacos sandwiched in between appears to have eased the pressure for now.
But speaking to OLBG, Lennon reckons that it's impossible to rule out a return to Govan for Gerrard - as he pointed to his own decision to come back to Celtic Park. He said: “Steven Gerrard back to Rangers? Never say never.
"Gerrard is still well thought of by Rangers fans and although he’s trying to make his way in Saudi at the moment I think you can never rule it out. I ended up going back to Celtic and it was fantastic for me, he might want to do the same at Rangers.”
