Steven Gerrard slaughters English FA for sleeping on goal hero he tried to sign for Rangers
Steven Gerrard dug out the English FA for taking too long to call up Curtis Jones – five years after he tried 'desperately' to sign him at Rangers.
The Liverpool midfielder scored for the Three Lions in a 3-0 win over Greece on Thursday night after an impressive start to club life under Arne Slot. He's been in squads before but made his debut in Athens, playing the full 90 and rounding off the scoring with a delicious backheel flick at the death.
It was years in the making for the 23-year-old who has had to wait patiently for his international bow. While his contemporaries like Conor Gallagher and Phil Foden have racked up the caps, Jones has generally struggled to make the cut. Gerrard though has been a backer of the Scouse midfielder for years, having worked with him in his time coaching within the Liverpool academy. And reacting to his goal on Instagram, the Al-Ettifaq boss wrote: "What a player. Fine the FA and all the coaches for being late."
Gerrard was one of the first coaches to spot Jones' full potential and played a big part in propelling him up the ladder before he made his breakthrough under Jurgen Klopp. But back in 2019, when Gerrard was getting things going at Rangers and an 18-year-old Jones was on the fringes at Anfield, he tried 'desperately' to take him to Rangers.
Gary McAllister, who was Gerrard's No.2, told LFCTV earlier this year. “We did our best to try to get him up the road (to Rangers). Obviously, Steven had worked with him and all the guys at Rangers were desperate to get him but he was unavailable."
In the end that didn't work out and Jones stayed to fight for his place at Anfield. More than four years on, it's all paid off, with Jones now capped for England and a central player for the Premier League leaders.
