Ashley Phillips has pulled out of the England Elite League squad with an unspecified injury.

The 19-year-old centre-back, on loan at Stoke City from Tottenham for the season, was scheduled to play for England under-20s against Germany and Poland over the next week, alongside 19-year-old Stoke keeper Tommy Simkin, who is on loan at Walsall.

But the FA has announced that Phillips is among six players who have dropped out of the squad and replacements have been summoned for the matches on Friday and Tuesday in Chesterfield and Pulawy respectively.

Phillips was withdrawn early holding his shoulder in Stoke's 1-1 draw with Millwall in the Championship on Saturday, replaced by Michael Rose just 10 minutes into the second half. That was the fifth game in a row that he had started for Stoke having needed to be patient for his chance under new head coach Narcis Pelach.

He had been serving concussion protocol when Pelach was appointed and then missed another couple of weeks to catch the boss's eye in training because he was away with England.

“I’ve learned a lot. I think I’ve done well in both but I have to keep pushing and learning and improving as a footballer. Ultimately I want to help the club finish as high as possible so I need to keep performing," he said at the end of last month.

“(The coaches just told me to keep working). I knew my chance would come. It was unfortunate with my concussion that I missed quite a few days so I’ve had to wait patiently. When the chance came I knew I had to take it and hopefully I have.

“It’s the reason why I came here, to play regularly, and hopefully I can help convince the gaffer.”

Stoke are next in action away at Queens Park Rangers on Saturday, November 23.
