Wesley, the former Stoke City outhouse, is on a remarkable scoring run at his new club in Turkey with eight goals in his last eight appearances as he sniffs a promotion charge.

The 27-year-old striker once set Aston Villa back £22 million and also led the line for Brazil. But his career changed when he was stuck down by a horror injury at Burnley on New Year's Day 2020. He spent well over a year out of the game and would only play four more matches for Villa.

He went out on loan to try to find form, having a spell back in Brazil as well as with Levante in Spain, but Villa sanctioned a free transfer to Stoke when he still had a year left on his contract, subsidising a one-season deal under Alex Neil at the bet365 Stadium.

Neil had been looking for a target man as part of a big squad rebuild, but Kieffer Moore was too costly and Wesley was certainly powerful, breaking the gym equipment when he did his strength test in pre-season. He perhaps played more than anyone expected over the following few months as Stoke missed forwards such as Ryan Mmaee and Tyrese Campbell due to injury, but he couldn't find the net in 23 appearances, although he did force a late winner against Leeds United.

Wesley only made two sub appearances under Neil's replacement Steven Schumacher after the turn of the year and it was no surprise when he was released at the end of term.

He found a new home at Fatih Karagumruk in the Turkish second division, lining up next to Stoke teammate Daniel Johnson, and he has been in a prolific mood since then. He has 10 goals in 12 appearances in total and starred in a 6-1 win over Yeni Malatyaspor at the weekend to put Karagumruk fourth in the table, four points off the top spot.

Peter Etebo's Gençlerbirliği are 15th and the Stoke old boys' reunion will take place on December 8.
