Rosemary has been a buzzy ingredient in hair care for years, and there's even some scientific evidence to back it up: A 2022 study found that it may be as effective as minoxidil (the active ingredient in Rogaine) in aiding in hair growth, while another from 2015 determined it may be a useful treatment for alopecia. The ingredient also has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that can benefit overall hair and scalp health.

Nécessaire's new shampoo-and-conditioner combo leverages rosemary oil, alongside a blend of peptides, ceramides and proteins, to strengthen hair, protect it against breakage, moisturize and promote scalp health. I've been using the duo for a few weeks now, and I can already attest that it's giving me the refresh my hair desperately needed this spring. After just the first use, I was impressed by how soft and smooth my hair felt during styling. Then, after my second wash day with the products, I noticed my strands were significantly shinier, reflecting light in a way they hadn't for quite some time. I can't say I've noticed any major changes in breakage or overall strength of my hair just yet, but I do think my scalp — which tends to get oily, but also has occasional dry patches — has seemed to be more balanced. I'm hopeful about what longer-term use will yield.

And then there's the scent. Some rosemary-imbued hair products lean a bit too far into the herb's aroma — if I'm completely honest, I was worried that using Nécessaire's new lineup might make my head smell like a roast chicken — but that's not at all the case: There's a subtle rosemary scent for sure, but it's also balanced by a hint of sweetness and other herbal notes, for an effect that's more fresh than savory.
