Hashtag United has taken swift action to ban one of its own supporters for two seasons following allegations of homophobic abuse.

The south Essex football club say they were made aware of an alleged comment by staff members of Dulwich Hamlet Football Club during an away game on October 26.

Following an investigation, Hashtag United has now confirmed a supporter has been banned from all fixtures for two seasons.

The supporter must also complete an approved LGBTQIA+ awareness course before a return to games “can be considered”.

The club add that they will “continue to with others to ensure this club is one that leads by example”.

The full statement by Hashtag United said: “On Saturday, October 26, the club were informed by staff members of Dulwich Hamlet Football Club of an alleged homophobic comment made by a supposed Hashtag United FC supporter.

“The club takes all allegations of this nature extremely seriously and with the support of Dulwich Hamlet, we have conducted a thorough and fair investigation.

“After careful consideration of all the evidence available to us, we believe this comment was made and as such we have taken appropriate action.

“Having identified the perpetrator and having sought advice from both the league and an external specialist, the individual has today been served with a two season ban from all Hashtag United Men’s, Women’s and Junior fixtures.

“The perpetrator is also required to complete an approved LGBTQIA+ awareness course before a return to our games can be considered.

“Football is a sport that should be enjoyed by all, free from all forms of discrimination.
