Something special could be brewing for Leeds United in Daniel Farke’s eyes, but a top-three placing means nothing at this stage. The two-time Championship title winner feels the league table only takes proper shape during the long, breakless slog between November and March.

The points tally, one short of the two-a-game average generally needed for promotion, is what has really impressed Farke with one third of the season behind them. He is especially happy because of the unexpected disruption of the summer transfer window.

“At the moment, the league position is not important,” he said. “The table will be made in this league between November and March. It's always the same, but we have brought ourselves into a really good position.

“The points on the board, no one can take them away and more important than the league position is, at the moment, the points tally. To be there, after this amount of games, already with 29 points is pretty good, but I'm also pretty pleased with our performances, our approach.

“We had a bit more fluctuation in terms of changes in personnel terms than we wanted in the summer and then, normally, it takes a while until you are in your perfect rhythm. For that, we are pretty good so far because, performance-wise, we have great consistency.”

Farke has been encouraged by the winning mentality shown by his side. The way they have responded to their two defeats, to Burnley and Millwall, with victories tells the manager a lot about the direction this season is going in.

“We have many, many clean sheets, defend really well,” he said. “We also had good solutions for many sucker punches when key players were out, also with long-term injuries.

“We adapted to difficult situations and also this mentality, after a loss, always to be able to answer with a win, that's what we've done so far, is always quite crucial and always quite important, like today (against Queens Park Rangers), and this is normally always a sign of winning mentality.

“This encourages me also to think we have the chance to create something special during the season, but it's the Championship. It's a long road and we're just there after 15 games and many, many more games will come. So we have to keep going.”
