Birmingham City Under-21s have not had the happiest time so far this season, Steve Spooner’s young team are struggling towards the bottom end of the Professional Development League 2 table with only three wins from their first 11 games.

However, Blues’ youngsters enjoyed a morale boosting 3-2 victory over their Leeds United counterparts in the Premier League Cup in Stratford-upon-Avon last night, with two goals from fit-again striker Frank Tattum.

The 19-year-old scored two headers either side of half-time to put his team 2-0 up, with Menzi Mazwi making the game safe. Two late goals from Rhys Chadwick and Connor Douglas introduced an element of jeopardy to the outcome, one that in truth should have been out of the question as Blues created and missed other good chances.

However, the result – Blues’ first points in the competition – comes off the back of a promising 2-2 draw with Barnsley in the league last time out in which they twice came back from a goal down.

It also marks a pleasing return for Tattum who was enjoying a promising pre-season and was working with Chris Davies’ first team on their tour to Austria only to pick up an ankle injury in the warm-up to the friendly with Paderborn in July.

That was especially frustrating for a youngster who came into this season with hopes of being recognised at first team level and failing that potentially securing a loan for a first taste of senior football. Tattum scored 20 goals last season and helped the U18s win the PDL North Division and the National Play-Off final for the first time in club history.

It is expected he will continue his comeback with the U21s before attention turns to the January transfer window and discussions over a potential loan.
