Gary Neville claimed Bruno Fernandes is the only Manchester United signing who has surpassed expectations in the past 10 years when analysing Ruben Amorim's biggest challenges at the club.

Amorim was announced as the new United manager on Friday after Erik ten Hag was sacked four days earlier. Amorim will start work at United on November 11 and has signed a contract until June 2027 with the option of an additional year.

United are currently 13th in the Premier League table ahead of their clash with Chelsea and they have failed to win any of their opening three Europa League games. The size of the task facing Amorim is clear to see and Neville was asked for his thoughts on the appointment before the game against Chelsea.

Speaking on Sky Sports, Neville admitted he wasn't a fan of the three-at-the-back system Amorim could bring to United but did say he could see the benefit of using such a formation.

"I'm not a fan of three at the back, I've never played three at the back in my life at United but, the fact of the matter is, you look at the centre-backs and full-backs that they've got and you don't trust any of them in a pair and you don't trust any of the full-backs to defend one-on-one," he said. "I think the five would give them some extra security, I suppose."

Neville went on to question why the players and managers who had arrived at United over the past decade had failed to live up to expectations, challenging Amorim to get the best out of the squad.

"He has to get the best out of the players. The players need to take responsibility for what's happened in the last 10 years," he added.

"The club have signed a lot of players that other clubs wanted and when those players have arrived at Manchester United they've deteriorated. Why is that? It could be the coach, it could be the players, it could be the environment is too big for them, whatever it is it has to change because if he [Amorim] doesn't change that he will fall the same way the rest of them have.

"There are managers that have come here that have been tried and tested and successful, there are players that have come here with great potential and ones that you thought would be good signings for the club - only really Bruno [Fernandes] I can think of in 10 years has signed for the club and done more than I thought he would. I can't think of any other player. That's £1.8bn spent in the last 10 years, that's one thing that has to change."
