Thiago Alcântara has released a message after his exit from Liverpool was confirmed. The midfielder has paid tribute to the club, as well as the ‘unique’ fan base.

Thiago will leave Anfield following Sunday’s final game of the season against Wolves. The midfielder’s contract expires at the end of this month, with Liverpool choosing not to renew terms.

The 33-year-old will therefore bid farewell alongside Jürgen Klopp and Joël Matip, having spent nearly four years at the club. His time on Merseyside has been plagued with injuries, having only made one appearance this season with a short cameo at Arsenal in February.

Thiago though did play a big part in Liverpool going close to a quadruple during the 2021/22 campaign, and played in the FA Cup and Champions League finals that season. As his time at Anfield draws to a close, the former Barcelona and Bayern Munich star has released an emotional message on social media. Given he's played for three of the biggest clubs in world football, his assessment that Liverpool is "unique" speaks volumes about how special the Anfield club is.

“Appreciation and gratitude — they are two words that come to mind on the day I have to say goodbye to all of you, Reds. Thankful, too,” Thiago posted on X.

“Thankful for the opportunity to have been a part of this city, this club and this community. The continuous support I have received since day one has been incredible: Anfield cheering, the Kop chanting… amazing, overwhelming. A very unique fan base for a unique club.

“These past four years have been a time of learning for me and my family. Some wins, some defeats, but without a doubt, a life-changing experience. Teammates, coaches, staff and club employees: you were all part of it.

“And to the fans, I don’t have the words. Just know you will have my deepest gratitude forever. Thank you, it was an honour. All the best always, Liverpool FC.”

Liverpool.com says: Thiago’s time at Liverpool has only been the more frustrating due to fans knowing what he’s capable of when he’s fit. He was immense during the 2021/22 season, and was a big reason why the Reds went so close to a quadruple.

Unfortunately, it was rather inevitable that he would be leaving this summer. His injury record has just become too big a hurdle.

He has shown his class though with his parting message. It tells you everything that a player who won the Champions League with both Barcelona and Bayern Munich speaks so glowingly about Liverpool. It just goes to show how Klopp has re-established the Reds among the world’s elite.
