Lisandro Martinez couldn't hide his disappointment when he spoke after Manchester United's loss against West Ham and warned it's time for the players 'to be honest' with themselves.

United were utterly dominant in the first half at the London Stadium and they would have been leading comfortably had they taken any of the flurry of chances they created. Diogo Dalot's miss was particularly glaring. The defender took the ball around Lukasz Fabianski and had the goal at his mercy, only to somehow miss the target and balloon a shot wide.

West Ham improved in the second half and took the lead in the 73rd minute. Casemiro produced an equaliser fewer than 10 minutes later but the home side were awarded a controversial penalty with just seconds left in normal time.

Referee David Coote did not award the spot kick but he was advised to check the VAR monitor after a collision between Matthijs de Ligt and Danny Ings and a penalty was subsequently given.

Jarrod Bowen converted from the spot and United's players were still incensed as West Ham celebrated. The penalty was highly controversial and when Martinez emerged to speak to MUTV after the final whistle, he looked visibly disappointed and gave an honest interview.

"I hate to lose. I hate losing and this club is not what we want. The expectations are really high and we want to win every game," said Martinez.

"But now it's time to accept it and be honest with ourselves. I want the best for this club and I'm pretty sure this club will be in the top and we will give everything to put where it deserves to be.

"I'm so frustrated, honestly, so frustrated because I see every day our skills and quality, and then those days when we finish a game and lose, miss many chances again, it's difficult to accept but we have to accept it.

"Everyone fights and we give everything but I think we have to give more and we have to know that football is a mental game and we have to keep believing until the end with hunger.

"Today, we played a very good first half, then in the second half we dropped, then yeah, we conceded two goals and we couldn't win the game and I'm so disappointed, honestly."

United made their worst start to a Premier League season and failure to earn points at the London Stadium has left them in 14th, just seven points above the relegation zone, ahead of facing Leicester City in the Carabao Cup at Old Trafford on Wednesday.
