Todd Cantwell has spent the last 18 months living in Glasgow's goldfish bowl. But the penny has yet to drop with the Rangers star when it comes to posting on social media ahead of an Old Firm game. Especially one of the magnitude of a Scottish Cup Final.

The midfielder hasn't started the previous two meetings with Celtic and was even an unused sub when Gers' title hopes were dashed at Parkhead earlier this month. But the ex-Norwich City playmaker roared back into the Light Blues team with by scoring in back-to-back games against Dundee and Hearts.

That's put the 26-year-old firmly in contention for a rare start against the Hoops at Hampden this Saturday as Philippe Clement's side aim to get over the disappointment of watching their rivals celebrate yet another championship by at least signing off the season with a domestic Double - having already lifted the League Cup in December.

However, Cantwell's social media activity on Monday night appears to have rubbed Rangers fans up the wrong way at a time when tensions are already simmering among the fed-up Ibrox fanbase who are irate at the way their league campaign unfolded.

No stranger to a cryptic post on social media, Cantwell uploaded a picture of his goal celebration from Saturday's 3-3 draw at Tynecastle as he raised his finger in front of his lips, captioned "Shushburger please" along with a laughing emoji. It could well be an inside joke with his pals as he discreetly tagged two other accounts on his Instagram stories.

But the post quickly incurred the wrath of Rangers fans online, with many telling the player to keep a low head and to do his talking on the pitch ahead of a monumental game this weekend. Others questioned why he posted a picture from a dead rubber match they failed to win on the day Celtic got their hands on the Premiership trophy.

One fan raged: "Some players just don’t get it, Todd Cantwell is one of them."

Another posted: "When a saw Todd Cantwell celebration on Saturday a thought myself wis tad embarrassing."

A third wrote: "I wish Todd Cantwell would just ssshhhhhhhut up on social media, the boy really canny help himself."

This punter pleaded: "Someone take Todd Cantwell’s phone off him please."

A fifth supporter said: "Todd Cantwell putting ‘shushburger’ posts on his Instagram after a 3-3 draw when you have a Cup Final coming up is bizarre, better make a statement in the game."

While a sixth sighed: "I just don’t think he gets what football means to people in this country."

Cantwell soon removed the picture from his Instagram stories before uploading it again without the caption. He shared another post of him in action against the Jambos with the caption: "Ready up". But it's fair to say Rangers fans aren't impressed with the Englishman's actions in the build-up to Saturday's must-win clash against their greatest rivals.
