Todd Cantwell has Rangers edge over Tom Lawrence as Chris Sutton becomes unexpected defender of old rival

Chris Sutton believes Todd Cantwell offers Rangers more than Tom Lawrence as the Celtic hero became an unexpected defender of the Ibrox star.

The pair have had their fair share of battles across the season with Sutton previously labelling the player 'TikTok Todd' and questioning his "dives". Cantwell has fired back on numerous occasions, branding the Englishman an "attention seeker", but now the Sky Sports pundit has backed the former Norwich City man.

The conversation turned to who may start against the Hoops in next week's title decider and James McFadden opted for Lawrence, who scored a stunner in yesterday's 4-1 win over Kilmarnock. But Sutton picked Cantwell.

"He made an impact when he came on. I still don't think the Rangers fans have seen the very best of him. Really clever little shift and the finish is devastating," Sutton said on Lawrence, while Faddy added: "They bring something different. Tom Lawrence you see that quality and he plays more as a No10 and a support to the striker. He's got great technique, wants to do things quick like shift the ball and get a shot away or pass. Todd Cantwell brings energy and endeavour and has quality as well.

"He will go work and press to try and unsettle opposition and find space to affect the game. He brings a different energy. For me personally Tom Lawrence brings a bit more quality. It is not by far but I think he has more."

Sutton responded: "Do you? I don't. In terms of awareness, guile and for somebody to see a pass. I think Cantwell just has the edge on Lawrence. Over the course, Lawrence is probably a better finisher than Cantwell. They have slightly different attributes. It will be [John] Lundstram, [Mohamed] Diomande and one other. It will probably be similar, Cantwell will play an hour and Lawrence the last half hour I suspect."
