Togetherness in camp, outstanding display and interest circling in star players - Cheltenham Town boss Michael Flynn after Rotherham United FA Cup win

That was pretty special, wasn't it?

I thought we were outstanding. We knew they were going to hit the diags, we fell asleep after we scored, when they got the equaliser quickly. After that, we were outstanding. We played some good stuff and grew into the game. That is a fantastic win against a Rotherham team who are expected to be near the top of League One.

The first goal, from a set piece and the short corner routine has worked again

Yes, I don't like to take the praise, but yes, we spotted something and I had to get the players to believe in it and they did. Joel (Colwill) just has to get a good connection and hit the target and he's done that, but it was a great weight of pass from Luke (Young). It's pleasing when that happens because you can see we are doing things behind the scenes. That was great. The cross from Lewis (Payne) for Joel, great header and I didn't think Joel would ever score a header! A great diving header and then Ethon (Archer) tops it off. Today was a fantastic performance, coming here away from home and winning 3-1 and Joe (Day) not having much to do, was very pleasing. The fans didn't stop singing all game.

They were brilliant, weren't they?

Yes, it was 220, but it sounded like 320! Credit to them and the boys could feel it. We kept the Rotherham crowd quiet.

George Miller also played a part in the second goal, leading the line and working so hard

This is what I am saying to them now, we are getting a really close unit. I've praised Tom Pett and Matty Taylor after the game because they could be frustrated at not getting much game time, but they know the importance of seeing a game out using their experience and playing five or 10 minutes. They've been nothing but professional, keeping their heads down and working hard, champing at the bit to play and that's what we've got going through the group. Ethon is stepping up, JT (Jordan Thomas), Kinsella, Young, Benno, Bradbury, Stubbsy, you can go through them all. But George is doing a lot of unselfish running and work, allowing the front players to get close to him and play their stuff, high up the pitch, so it's important. That's a really pleasing aspect of what we are doing - our unselfish play.

What's changed because it almost seems like Swindon was a line in the sand because since then it's been on an upward curve

I just think a couple of players stood up second half against Swindon and didn't give up. They showed we can be an attacking threat. We shouldn't have lost that game, let's be honest we gave them three goals. But it wasn't good enough and I just said to them afterwards, there are ways to lose games and we will lose this season, I have no doubt, with a lot of ups and downs, but the lads are believing in themselves and everyone is playing their part, which is the most pleasing thing for me.

It's been four wins and a draw since then

We've been a lot more consistent for the duration of a game, not just in one half, whether it be first or second, or 20 minutes here or there. We are a new team, a new squad and it's going to take a lot of time to get to the finished article. We have only just started, but we are in a good moment at the minute. We want it to continue and next time we lose, we just bounce back and we try and go on another run.

Joel Colwill has five goals now, how pleased have you been with him?

He has not played a lot of football at first team level, the intensity of League Two is non-stop and relentless, with the Saturdays and the Tuesdays, he has gone away on international duty, travelling and extra games there. It's tough to keep up the levels, so he needed a rest and to come out because he fell below his standards and I told him I thought he was excellent Tuesday night and I thought he was excellent today, so we have to manage him and make sure we get the best out of him week-in, week-out. I don't care who scores, for me it's always about the team and the togetherness, because that can take you a long, long way.

How important is the FA Cup financially too?

I think I'll get a Christmas card off Clive (Gowing, financial director), now! He wasn't sure, but a couple of wins in the cups and I think I'll definitely get one.

Into the second round draw and who knows...

There are a lot of good teams in there and tough places to go. I'd just like a home draw and then we'll see where we go.

It's not the first time you've caused an FA Cup upset by any means. What is it about you and this competition?

It's just about the belief in what we are doing. We wanted to come here and take our game to Rotherham. You have to stay switched on and they have to have a couple of them on an off day, but I thought we were outstanding. Rotherham were trying, still going at the death to get a goal back, but we stood tall. When called upon, right at the end, Joe has made a fantastic save. He has a twinge in his back, so I don't know what we are going to do on Tuesday. But it's the whole team, the whole bench and the boys not involved are playing a big part at the moment and everyone is getting on, which is the pleasing thing for me.

Could Owen Evans be back for Tuesday or is that too early?

I'll have a look at that on Monday. He trained on Friday, but felt a little bit too uncomfortable so I didn't want to risk him. Mamadou (Diallo) is back and if I had to put him in, I'd put him in because I think he has a really bright future at 16 years of age. He is unbelievable with his feet, he's going to grow a little bit more and he's a very, very calm character.

It's your job to keep everyone grounded as manager, but how excited are you about what this team can achieve with it still being such early days?

We might lose one or two players in January and then we have to replace them, but we have to try and replace them with the quality that they are coming in for. I won't be signing people for the sake of it. When you sign 19 players in a pre-season, you have to take a few gambles and we have done that. They are paying dividends at the minute. I knew what George Miller could do, having worked with him before. It took him some time to get going. Now he is a vital cog in what we are doing, so it's early days, a fantastic win and we go on to Tuesday now.

When you say lose players in January is that loans being recalled, or are you potentially expecting some players to be sold?

It could be loans recalled, but I think there will be a lot of interest in a couple of our players. I don't want to lose them, obviously. If it happens, where somebody buys one of the players, hopefully we can get them loaned back to us until the end of the season, to give us a chance to do something in the summer.

Your son Edward was at the game with you most of the afternoon and he celebrated with the players afterwards and even did some post-match running. What does the FA Cup mean to him because he was probably too young to enjoy it when you played Man City, wasn't he?

He's been coming to the games since the age of two and he travels on the coach, not all the time and it has to be the right time. It's half term this week and the club are thankfully fine with it because he's no problem. I think he won at cards against the lads on Friday night, but no money was exchanged of course! He's a smashing lad as are all my kids, but he knows how to behave around the players and around the football club. If he's a good boy, he can come again. What he did say was he's been to two away games and we've had a draw and a win, so I'll take them.

And he held his own in the running too!

Yes, he's just a football fanatic, who knows everything. It's nice to be able to celebrate with him.
