Gbadehan 'devastated' with injury news after first-team debut

Adeteye Gbadehan has opened up about his 'devastation' after a severe injury halted his progress following his first-team debut for Cardiff City earlier this season.

The young midfielder, 20, has been working tirelessly to recover from a Grade 3 anterior talofibular ligament (ATFL) tear and a Grade 2 calcaneofibular ligament (CFL) tear sustained in a Premier League Cup match against Ipswich Town back in September.

Gbadehan, who joined in the summer as a free agent and started the Carabao Cup match against Southampton, said: "I thought it was just like a rolled ankle or something, because I had never been injured before.

"I ended up getting a scan and I was told the detail of the injury. Honestly, I was just devastated. I had just made my first-team debut, I felt like I was getting better and improving, so for me to get an injury, it really hurt."

He added: "It took me a couple of days to realise that I’m going to be out for some time. It’s my first injury and I didn’t come to Cardiff City thinking that I would get injured, nobody does, so I was just in shock. I was asking the medical team how quickly I could get back on the pitch, because I still wanted to improve and express myself on the pitch."

After a few months of rehab, Gbadehan now looks set to return to action for the under-21s and will doubtless want to impress and work his way back up into that first-team fold.

“It's felt really good to be back with the squad. Last week, it was my first time in two-and-a-half months training with the boys and being in that team environment, it honestly feels great," he added.

“My biggest takeaway from being injured is to not take playing football for granted and always take advantage of every opportunity. I’m in my last few weeks of my rehabilitation now, so we’re aiming to have me back by the end of this month.

“It's going to be an incredible feeling to be back playing, I really can’t wait. When I get back, whether it’s for 20 or 30 minutes, whatever it is, it’ll just be a relief and it’ll be a real testament to the medical staff, because they’ve helped me a lot.”

Cardiff lose to Brentford

Luke Pearce was on the scoresheet for Cardiff in their 2-1 friendly defeat by Brentford this afternoon.

Goals from Ethan Brierley and Benjamin Arthur secured the win for the Bees, but for Cardiff it was more of a case of getting fringe players and returning stars up to full fitness ahead of the return from international break.

The Bluebirds actually took the lead in the first half when goalkeeper Reggie Rose spilled Yakou Meite's free-kick before saving Kion Etete's follow-up, but Pearce tapped home from close range when the shot was parried.

But the Premier League side got back on terms on 65 minutes through a Brierley free-kick. Arthur netted the winner 10 minutes later.

Pearce was signed as a free agent in the summer after leaving Southampton before he was allowed to head on loan to Sligo Rovers for the end of their campaign in Ireland. He netted twice and assisted once in 13 games for the top-flight outfit.

Brentford: Rose; Holland (Lisbie 75), Arthur, Headman (Avenell 62), Yogane (Laidlaw 80); Maghoma (Krauhaus 62), Owen, Brierley (Dickov 80), Nunes (Williams 45), Thiago (Morgan 45), Hay.

Cardiff: Horvath (Turner 75); Jeffries (Barton 75), Fish, Daland (Cook 62), Collins; Méïté (Jones 82), Bagan, Cashford, Reindorf (Wigley 82); Etete (Perrett 45), Pearce.

Tsunoda: My time is coming

Ryotaro Tsunoda is also eyeing a return to action after months out following hamstring surgery.

The Japanese defender joined from Yokohama F Marinos back in January and was loaned straight out to Cardiff's sister club in Belgium, KV Kortrijk, where he impressed during his nine-game stint there. Sign up to our daily Cardiff City newsletter here.

However, a season-ending hamstring injury meant he had to undergo surgery at the back end of last season and he has slowly had to build his way back up to begin training.

Interim boss Omer Riza last week revealed his delight that the centre-back had returned to training, with a potential loan away in January looming, too. However that return to the pitch comes, Tsunoda is looking ahead to better things to come after a torrid few months of rehab.

"Finally I’m back to training after a long journey. I got through a tough time," he wrote on social media.

"Something great is going to happen. My time is coming."

Academy product signs for Scottish Premiership side

St Mirren have snapped up Cardiff academy product and ex-Rangers left-back Declan John on a short-term deal. The Welsh defender, who was a free agent after his departure from Bolton Wanderers, has committed to the club until January.

At 29 years old, John brings experience from his beginnings at Cardiff City, for whom he turned out 42 times including in the Premier League, and stints at Barnsley, Chesterfield, and Rangers, where he eventually signed permanently in 2018. Following his time at Ibrox, he turned out for Swansea, Sunderland, Bolton, and Salford City, and is now set for another shot at Scottish football.

On joining St Mirren, he said: "I'm absolutely delighted to be here. It's been a crazy few days. I came up on Thursday, trained on Friday and went to watch the game on Saturday which was a great win for the boys. I've enjoyed it and I'm really looking forward to getting back into training. From walking in, everything has been so positive and you can feel that in the changing room. It feels like a really good place to be."

His addition comes as a boost for the Buddies' defence following the termination of Jaden Brown's contract. Brown, who faced legal issues last month, has parted ways with the club.

Manager Stephen Robinson said: "Declan is here on a short-term deal with a view to extending depending on how it goes. The circumstances we find ourselves in means we're very short of defence cover. Declan comes in with a vast amount of experience. He's played at some very high levels and obviously been up in Scotland before as well so we're very lucky that we've been able to get him in.

"We've seen his quality in his first couple of days in training. He's a talented boy, is very good technically but he hasn't played a lot of football in recent months so that's something we need to look at and try to get him up to speed. To add to the squad with the quality and background Declan has, I believe we are very lucky at this stage of the season."
