Torquay United 2 Chelmsford City 2 - Gulls pegged back to claim just a point
The entertainment value was high at Plainmoor this afternoon - but after leading Chelmsford City 2-0 from the 13th minute, torquay-united-fc>Torquay United will be bitterly disappointed to have only got a point from a fiery encounter.
It was goals from Cody Cooke and new signing Jordan Young that gave Torquay that lead but Jake Hyde got a goal back in the first half before Cameron Jones scored to make it 2-2 in the 83rd minute.
It was a game heavily influenced by a patchy performance by referee Stacey Pearson, who listened to one of her assistants to disallow a second-half Torquay goal that the team had finished celebrating. It wasn't clear why the goal was chalked off.
But the Gulls did have two really good chances to make it 3-1 before the equaliser, with Omar Mussa and then Young missing the goal from close range.
There were three changes to the team that started the 2-1 defeat at Hornchurch last weekend with Young, Mussa and the captain Oscar Threlkeld coming in. Will Jenkins Davies was missing because of his hip flexor injury, while Finn Tonks made the bench despite breaking his nose in the last game. Brad Ash dropped to the bench.
Torquay were 1-0 ahead in the second minute when Young made a run from inside the Gulls' own area, skirked along the edge of the box before shooting with his left foot. The ball was parried by Woody Williamson in the Chelmsford goal, but it sprang out to Cooke, who wrapped his foot around it to aim it home.
A Young shot from 20 yards had to be turned over the bar by Williamson - but with his third shot he found the net. The corner was half cleared twice before popping out to Young, who smashed the ball home through a crowd with his left foot. Young's fourth shot looped over the bar two minutes later. It was a great start from the 25-year-old new boy.
Jake Hyde had a 29th minute shot saved as Chelmsford fought back and started to look a lot more dangerous. Alfie Bendle then mis-hit the ball wide from close range. But it was 2-1 in the 30th minute when Hyde headed home a cross by Sam Oguntayo. Hyde had a shot turned around the post by Hamon soon after.
Torquay celebrated a third goal in the 35th minute when a Young corner was cleared and Sam Dreyer hit the ball home from just inside the area. It was an age before the referee went to see the assistant who told her thought there was an offside or a foul in the build-up.
Jordan Dyer got a head to Young free kick but the ball sailed wide. Bendle shot wide at the other end. It was an exciting first halt, to say the least.
In the early stages of the second half both sides had periods of possession. Mussa was bundled off the ball in the 53rd minute, 21 yards from goal. Young curled the free kick around the wall but wide. Archie Tamplin shot over with a volley. The game was stopped for an injury to Arthur Penney coming up to the hour mark.
Young shot just over with a free kick in the 66th minute with the game getting feisty. Another Young shot was blocked. Cooke and Threlkeld had shots blocked from inside the box in a move that ended with Young putting the third chance over. Mussa shot just over when he should have scored in the 72nd minute.
Mussa came off limping in the 79th minute, replaced by Hasani, as Chelmsford waited to take a corner. Torquay were under a bit of pressure now.
And in the 83rd minute Hamon couldn't hold on to a strike and he let the ball pop out of his grasp, and substitute Jones struck to make it 2-2.
Back came Torquay and a Hasani shot was deflected wide. with a Young strike was also diverted away from goal. There were a couple of good defensive headers by Matt Carson at the other end.
As Hasani was knocked off the ball in the box, five minutes were added on and another Young shot was blocked. A Cooke flick from a Carson cross was deflected over. The corner was cleared and that was the end of it.
The point means Torquay are fifth in the table, still three points from the top, with an away trip to Salisbury to come on Tuesday night.
