Sergio Reguilon could link up with his ‘idol’ Gareth Bale at Tottenham this season with old tweets from the left-back showing just how highly he regards the Welshman.

Tottenham are closing in on a £25m deal to sign Reguilon in a deal which is expected to include a buy-back clause and a clause allowing Real Madrid to match any future fee for the for 23-year-old.

Spurs are also working on a sensational deal to bring Bale back to north London seven years on from his then-world record move to the Bernabeu.

Reguilon, a product of Real’s youth academy has long been a fan. In October 2013, then still a youth team player, he tweeted: “Gareth Bale scoring two goals in his first game as a starter at the Bernabeu #idol #GB11” after the winger had scored twice – and provided two assists – in a 7-3 win over Sevilla.

In March 2014, Reguilon tweeted a picture of himself alongside the Wales international along with the message: “One of the happiest days meeting my idol @GarethBale11.”

Reguilon has had just one full season in the Real first-team, either side of loan spells with Logrones and Sevilla last season. In 2018, he was promoted to the first-team by Julen Lopetegui, making 14 La Liga appearances, often in the same side as Bale.

The two could pick up that partnership down the left for Tottenham this season should things progress in the coming days.
