Tottenham vs Chelsea - LIVE!

Tottenham's unbeaten start to the Premier League season came to an end in extraordinary fashion as Chelsea earned a 4-1 win thanks to a Nicolas Jackson hat-trick in a remarkable London derby.

There were five goals disallowed, red cards for Cristian Romero and Destiny Udogie, injuries to James Maddison and Micky Van de Ven, and plenty more beyond that, as Mauricio Pochettino enjoyed a successful return to north London, though it was far less comfortable than the scoreline suggested. Dejan Kulusevski gave the hosts an early lead, and Spurs looked well capable of running away with it in the opening exchanges, but Chelsea grew into it the more frantic things became. Romero saw red as Cole Palmer equalised from the penalty spot, with Udogie then sent-off too after the break.

Tottenham threatened to hold on, but Jackson netted a second-half hat-trick as the space opened up to finally down the hosts. It leaves Spurs a point off the top of the table, but with concerns over suspensions and injuries, while Chelsea lifted themselves into the top half.

The upshot of the most action- and controversy-packed Premier League game of the VAR-era was a painful lesson for Ange Postecoglou's Tottenham.

Losing to Chelsea always hurts but, for all their spirit, bravery and fight, nine-man Spurs were the makers of their own downfall as their unbeaten start to the season was ended by their former head coach, Mauricio Pochettino, whose side eventually won 4-1.

It is genuinely difficult to know where to start in assessing a game including no fewer than five disallowed goals (three for Chelsea, two for Spurs; four for fractional offsides, one for a handball), two red cards for the hosts, two stoppage-time goals and a nasty injury to Micky van de Ven - which, long-term, might be the most damaging incident of the lot.

Tottenham player ratings

Guglielmo Vicario 9

Unreal. Denied Jackson with outstanding saves in either half but could little about his late show. Also made a brave block to keep out Marc Cucurella's effort, and was perfect at charging off his line to clear when Spurs were a man, and then two men, down but could do nothing about the winning goal..

Cristian Romero 2

Lost his head. Lucky to avoid a sanction for kicking out at Levi Colwill before following through on Fernandez with his studs showing, conceding the penalty.

Postecoglou reflects on VAR impact

Monday 6 November 2023 22:41 , Matt Verri

He tells BBC Sport: "I don't like it, it is the way the game is going. Some of it is self inflicted because if we come out every week complaining about decision that is what will happen, every decision gets forensically checked and we will be sitting around for a long time in every game trying to figure out what is going on.

"I don't like it but I am probably in the wilderness with that because I keep getting told that's where we want to go.

"I am too old school, I'll respect the referee's decision right or wrong. But it is the way the game is going."

Chelsea ratings

Monday 6 November 2023 22:33 , Matt Verri

Nicolas Jackson - 8

A very busy night for the striker, who scored in the 75th minute by tapping in Sterling's cross, then sealed the victory in stoppage time with two more goals.

He had already scored earlier, only for VAR to rule it out for offside. It must be said, he also missed some easy chances before he won it.

Raheem Sterling - 9

Sterling was the first out-ball every time Chelsea broke Tottenham's press and he set up the key second goal. He had already scored in the first half but the ball unluckily deflected onto his arm and was ruled out by VAR.

Jamie Carragher as stunned as anyone!

Monday 6 November 2023 22:30 , Matt Verri

"I've been watching football for almost 40 years and certainly as a neutral, I would say that was one of the most enjoyable games I've seen for so many different reasons," Carragher tells Sky Sports.

"It was absolutely box office and that is why the Premier League is the best league in the world by an absolute country mile!"

Spurs fans appreciative

Monday 6 November 2023 22:24 , Matt Verri

Home supports gave their side a huge ovation at the final whistle.

Not often that happens after a 4-1 defeat, but they know their side were not far away from something incredible in the circumstances.

Three for Jackson...

Monday 6 November 2023 22:13 , Matt Verri

He could have had about 15 goals, but Jackson will settle for a hat-trick.

FT: Tottenham 1-4 Chelsea

Monday 6 November 2023 22:11 , Matt Verri

Spurs fans still in fine voice, they can appreciate the remarkable effort of their side.

Jackson has the match ball, Chelsea have the three points... that doesn't really tell the story of the match though.

An INCREDIBLE London derby.

GOAL! Tottenham 1-4 Chelsea | Nicolas Jackson 90+7

Monday 6 November 2023 22:08 , Matt Verri

Hat-trick for Jackson!

All sorts of space on offer and Chelsea finally making them pay.

He has Mudryk up with him, but Jackson strolls through, sits Vicario down and rolls the ball into an empty net.

GOAL! Tottenham 1-3 Chelsea | Nicolas Jackson 90+4

Monday 6 November 2023 22:05 , Matt Verri

THAT SEALS IT.

Spurs' race is finally run. Again Chelsea are streaking away in behind that high line.

Gallagher it is making the run, he's away. Jackson free in the middle, gets the pass and he sweeps home.

Tottenham 1-2 Chelsea

Monday 6 November 2023 22:04 , Matt Verri

90+3 mins: Chelsea are RATTLED.

Spurs are on the charge all of a sudden, Son charging into the box and it's a real chance to equalise... Sanchez with a big save.

Nizaar Kinsella at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

Monday 6 November 2023 22:01 , Matt Verri

Nine minutes of added time. This remarkable match won't have more twists surely?

Vicario just survived a high boot from Mudryk... another hearts in mouths moment for Spurs.

Tottenham 1-2 Chelsea

Monday 6 November 2023 22:00 , Matt Verri

89 mins: Mudryk catches Vicario late, the goalkeeper with some lovely acrobatics to make the most of it.

Yellow card for the Chelsea man.

Tottenham 1-2 Chelsea

Monday 6 November 2023 21:57 , Matt Verri

87 mins: ALMOST!

It should be 2-2! Another brilliant delivery, Bentancur free in the middle but he can't quite get enough on the header as he tries to catch up with the ball.

Tottenham 1-2 Chelsea

Monday 6 November 2023 21:56 , Matt Verri

86 mins: Tottenham just want to win a free-kick, Emerson basically standing on the ball... and Gusto delivers!

Madness. Yellow card for the full-back and Spurs have a set-piece out wide.

Tottenham 1-2 Chelsea

Monday 6 November 2023 21:54 , Matt Verri

83 mins: Chelsea just keeping the ball now, passing it around.

It's almost as though they've realised they have two extra men on the pitch...

Tottenham 1-2 Chelsea

Monday 6 November 2023 21:51 , Matt Verri

81 mins: It's a long, long VAR check... Dier is offside.

On we go. Best of luck predicting what we're going to get in the next ten minutes or so.

Might be a fair bit more than that too, when it comes to added-time.

GOOOO..... OFFSIDE!

Monday 6 November 2023 21:49 , Matt Verri

WHAT IS HAPPENING.

Free-kick Spurs, flicked on by Bentancur and Dier hammers in a volley at the back post. Glorious finish.

But the offside flag is up. It won't count.

Tottenham 1-2 Chelsea

Monday 6 November 2023 21:48 , Matt Verri

77 mins: And Pochettino immediately turns to his bench.

James is off for the Blues, with Guston on at right-back to replace him.

Tottenham 1-2 Chelsea

Monday 6 November 2023 21:47 , Matt Verri

76 mins: VAR check for offside... goal stands.

Now then. What do Tottenham do?

GOAL! Tottenham 1-2 Chelsea | Nicolas Jackson 75'

Monday 6 November 2023 21:46 , Matt Verri

AT LAST!

It's taken long enough, but Chelsea finally work it out.

This time Sterling makes a good run, gets the pass and he's clean through. Squares it for Jackson, who is left with a simple finish.

Tottenham 1-1 Chelsea

Monday 6 November 2023 21:44 , Matt Verri

73 mins: Porro with a fist pump to the crowd, as Mudryk gives the ball away and then makes a frustrated foul.

It is Tottenham (yes, the ones with nine men) who are playing with more confidence.

Cucurella then gives away a very cheap foul - turning into a nightmare for Chelsea.

Tottenham 1-1 Chelsea

Monday 6 November 2023 21:42 , Matt Verri

71 mins: Vicario wastes a couple of minutes as he goes down injured - he's fine to continue. Has to be, Spurs have no more subs to make.

Gallagher then launches the ball straight out of play. How on earth are Chelsea making a mess of this?!

Tottenham 1-1 Chelsea

Monday 6 November 2023 21:39 , Matt Verri

68 mins: INCREDIBLE.

Spurs basically have eight players standing still on the halfway line, this time Chelsea do time the pass and the run.

Cucurella clean through, chops inside past Porro but Vicario is out swiftly to smother the shot.

Jackson from the rebound... Skipp gets there first. This is just crazy.

Tottenham 1-1 Chelsea

Monday 6 November 2023 21:38 , Matt Verri

67 mins: You really cannot believe this... from both teams.

Spurs are so, so brave with nine men. But Chelsea are falling for it, just playing the ball over the top as early as possible and being caught offside every time.

Pochettino is FURIOUS.

Tottenham 1-1 Chelsea

Monday 6 November 2023 21:35 , Matt Verri

64 mins: Vicario is basically the goalkeeper and defence right now.

With his defenders standing on the halfway line, it's up to Vicario to sweep up anything played in behind.

Chelsea think they are in, but Vicario appears from nowhere to fly out and boot the ball away.

Tottenham 1-1 Chelsea

Monday 6 November 2023 21:34 , Matt Verri

63 mins: Chelsea continue to try and just lob the ball in behind and break the offside trap... it's not happening for them though.

Hojbjerg somehow chases back and keeps up with Sterling, hacking the ball out of play. This is all barely believable.

Tottenham 1-1 Chelsea

Monday 6 November 2023 21:32 , Matt Verri

61 mins: James fires a shot wide, very nearly finds the far corner.

Two Spurs changes. Sarr and Kulusevski off, Bentancur and Skipp on.

The hosts have half an hour to hold on for a point. Surely not...

Dan Kilpatrick at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

Monday 6 November 2023 21:31 , Matt Verri

Spurs now have a back four of Porro, Dier, Hojbjerg and Emerson but are still playing Postecoglou's high defensive line.

You sense it will be a busy half-hour for Vicario.

Tottenham 1-1 Chelsea

Monday 6 November 2023 21:29 , Matt Verri

58 mins: No surprise that Chelsea are going to really go for this now.

Fernandez off, Mudryk on to replace him.

Spurs are STILL persisting with this high line, Jackson makes the run in behind and Mudryk finds him.

Jackson clean through, Vicario saves... and again from the rebound! And then the offside flag goes up.

We might break the offside record here.

Tottenham 1-1 Chelsea

Monday 6 November 2023 21:27 , Matt Verri

56 mins: WHAT A MISS!

Jackson with an extraordinary miss. Ball loops up for him, a few yards out and a completely free header.

Doesn't connect with it properly, Hojbjerg back on his own line to clear.

Tottenham 1-1 Chelsea

Monday 6 November 2023 21:26 , Matt Verri

55 mins: Spurs were actually still offering something on the break, and Chelsea haven't been able to find that ruthless edge despite the ridiculous amount of space on offer.

But Udogie has just launched into a challenge on Sterling when already on a booking... second yellow and he's off.

Postecoglou not in a rush to acknowledge him as he trudges off.

Tottenham 1-1 Chelsea

Monday 6 November 2023 21:25 , Matt Verri

54 mins: Sterling driving into space, it's three-on-two... huge chance for Chelsea.

Udogie wins it back, but then he flies in on Sterling. AND HE'S OFF!

Spurs are down to nine men. What. Is. He. Doing.

Tottenham 1-1 Chelsea

Monday 6 November 2023 21:23 , Matt Verri

52 mins: James whips it into a good area, Chelsea want a penalty for some holding in the middle but the referee has no interest.

Nor, thankfully for us all wanting this to be done this side of New Year, does VAR.

Tottenham 1-1 Chelsea

Monday 6 November 2023 21:22 , Matt Verri

51 mins: Spurs continue to stay high, press up the pitch and look to play out from the back.

Udogie ruins that plan with an awful pass, and Bissouma fouls Gallagher as tries to get his team-mate out of trouble. Good position this free-kick.

Tottenham 1-1 Chelsea

Monday 6 November 2023 21:20 , Matt Verri

49 mins: Spurs win the ball back high up the pitch, chance for them to get on the attack.

Sarr driving forward, has Son to his left but Disasi reads the pass and steps up to intercept.

Tottenham 1-1 Chelsea

Monday 6 November 2023 21:18 , Matt Verri

47 mins: Good news for Chelsea fans - Spurs haven't dropped any deeper. Sill keeping faith with that incredibly high line.

Gallagher slides the pass through to Palmer, space just outside the area and he curls a strike wide. Not far away at all.

Back underway!

Monday 6 November 2023 21:16 , Matt Verri

We're up and running again in north London.

Change at the break from Pochettino. Colwill off, having been booked. Cucurella on at left-back.

Monday 6 November 2023 21:14 , Matt Verri

Chelsea had just about more possession and more shots. You'd imagine that pattern will continue.

Two yellows and a red for Spurs, two yellows for Chelsea... anything could happen in the next 45 minutes.

The visitors need to keep their heads, but you wouldn't bet on them doing so.

Nizaar Kinsella at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

Monday 6 November 2023 21:08 , Matt Verri

Maybe the night Chelsea single-handedly kill off Spurs's title challenge in November.

Van de Ven pulled up with a hamstring injury, Maddison also off injured.

HT: Tottenham 1-1 Chelsea

Monday 6 November 2023 21:02 , Matt Verri

And that's half-time.

Chelsea had the ball in the net about 17 times, only of them counted. That was a penalty that was very nearly saved, and it came after Romero was shown a straight red card.

Romero could already have been sent off for a ridiculous kick, while Udogie was fortunate to escape a red too.

Spurs took the lead through Kulusevski, then thought they'd made it 2-0 through Son only for the offside flag to go up.

James just about avoided a red late in the half... and Spurs have lost Maddison and Van der Ven to injuries.

Apart from that, fairly quiet.

Tottenham 1-1 Chelsea

Monday 6 November 2023 20:59 , Matt Verri

45+11 mins: What now?

Another VAR check. We're still going to be here at Christmas.

James has swung an elbow at Udogie - ridiculous from the Chelsea captain. He gets away with it though, on we go.

Pochettino looks as stunned as anyone on the touchline, can barely believe what he's seeing.

Tottenham 1-1 Chelsea

Monday 6 November 2023 20:57 , Matt Verri

45+9 mins: Udogie is just not defending. James is all over him, Chelsea are going to make something happen on that wing before long if Spurs don't sort it out.

Meanwhile, Colwill has got himself into a shoving match with Sarr. Head completely gone - Chelsea players trying to drag him away.

Home fans want a red - it will be a yellow for both.

Tottenham 1-1 Chelsea

Monday 6 November 2023 20:55 , Matt Verri

45+7 mins: Sterling running at Porro, into the box and he launches himself to the floor.

Porro lets Sterling know what he thinks of that... as does the entirety of the stadium. It's a dive - Sterling should be booked for that.

Tottenham 1-1 Chelsea

Monday 6 November 2023 20:52 , Matt Verri

45+5 mins: There is so much space it's crazy.

James has the entirety of the right wing to himself, low cross into the box and Vicario does well to claim it.

Chelsea come again though, James this time has a ball turned behind by Dier. Relentless pressure.

Taken short, Palmer clips it into the box... headed out.

Tottenham 1-1 Chelsea

Monday 6 November 2023 20:50 , Matt Verri

45+2 mins: Spurs continue to stand on the halfway line, Sterling continues to run in behind at every opportunity.

He's onside this time, squares it towards Jackson... Dier slides in to prevent a certain goal. Tottenham are all over the place, they need to make it to half-time somehow.

And then full-time.

Tottenham 1-1 Chelsea

Monday 6 November 2023 20:49 , Matt Verri

45 mins: So, Van der Ven hobbles off. Emerson is on for him.

Dear me... Maddison off too! You cannot believe how badly things are falling apart for Spurs. Hojbjerg introduced.

And we've got 12 minutes added on - you can add another couple to that too!

Tottenham 1-1 Chelsea

Monday 6 November 2023 20:47 , Matt Verri

44 mins: This is just as bad as it gets for Tottenham right now.

Maddison back up, but seconds later Van der Ven has gone down and his hamstring has gone.

He's in a sprint with Jackson, immediately pulls up and grabs his hamstring. He's in a lot of pain - his night will be over.

Tottenham 1-1 Chelsea

Monday 6 November 2023 20:46 , Matt Verri

43 mins: Real concern here for Spurs, Maddison is down holding his ankle. Didn't look to be much contact, so might have twisted something.

He'll get some treatment... and Son will continue to argue about that red card with the referee.

Just about!

Monday 6 November 2023 20:43 , Matt Verri

Vicario not far away from keeping that out...

Tottenham 1-1 Chelsea

Monday 6 November 2023 20:42 , Matt Verri

40 mins: Sterling is going to get more chances. Lots of them.

Spurs basically just standing on the halfway line and Sterling will be clean through if he can time his run.

At the other end, Sarr tries his luck from a mile out. Deflects and just about reaches Sanchez.

GOO... OFFSIDE!

Monday 6 November 2023 20:40 , Matt Verri

37 mins: This is just a ridiculous match.

Again the ball is in the back of the net, again it doesn't count.

Such a high line from Spurs, Sterling played in behind and he squares it for Jackson, who finishes confidently.

All for nothing - linesman then raises the flag.

Tottenham 1-1 Chelsea

Monday 6 November 2023 20:39 , Matt Verri

36 mins: There has been a change, amid all the chaos.

Johnson the man sacrificed by Postecoglou, as Dier comes on at centre-back.

Porro now down for Spurs, he's turned his ankle trying to challenge Gallagher. Looks like he'll be fine to continue.

GOAL! Tottenham 1-1 Chelsea | Cole Palmer 35'

Monday 6 November 2023 20:37 , Matt Verri

CHELSEA ARE LEVEL!

Back to the football... Palmer makes no mistake from the penalty spot. Just!

Vicario gets a big hand to it, turns it onto the inside of the post but the ball just about creeps in.

Massive chance for Chelsea to make this a statement night now.

Monday 6 November 2023 20:36 , Matt Verri

Son is arguing the case for Spurs, and Romero is very much not going off the pitch in a hurry.

He'll have to at some point though - it was a ridiculous challenge. And not his first of the match. Son still arguing.

At long last, Romero trudges off. Home fans not happy as the replay is shown on the screen.

PENALTY CHELSEA!

Monday 6 November 2023 20:34 , Matt Verri

And a red card for Romero!

WOW. Huge, huge moment in this match.

Michael Oliver over to look at the monitor, and he's decided it's a penalty and a red card for the Spurs centre-back.

Monday 6 November 2023 20:33 , Matt Verri

Right, he's offside. No goal.

We're now looking at a penalty check though, for that wild challenge from Romero.

Surely he can't keep getting away with these...

Monday 6 November 2023 20:32 , Matt Verri

29 mins: Sterling wanted a penalty in the build-up, Romero then clattered Fernandez. Spurs get away with both of those.

Ball then comes to Caicedo, who finds the bottom corner. But the linesman thinks Jackson was standing in an offside position and impacting play.

It's very tight... on both counts.

NO GOAL!

Monday 6 November 2023 20:31 , Matt Verri

Dear me, this is wild.

Chelsea having a brilliant spell, and they think they have an equaliser.

A succession of shots ends with Caicedo lashing it home from 25 yards out, brilliant finish.

But the offside flag is up!

Tottenham 1-0 Chelsea

Monday 6 November 2023 20:27 , Matt Verri

24 mins: Spurs are having a great few minutes.

Romero's kick does not interest VAR, he's going to get away with it.

Tottenham still have 11 on the pitch, and they still have the lead. It's all getting very heated though.

NO GOAL!

Monday 6 November 2023 20:25 , Matt Verri

It's ruled out!

Ball bounced up and hit Sterling's arm, before he then finished past Vicario. VAR has chalked it off.

Right then, red card check for that Romero kick?

GOAL! Tottenham 1-1 Chelsea | Raheem Sterling 21'

Monday 6 November 2023 20:24 , Matt Verri

LEVEL!

A mess in the build-up, Romero seems to have kicked out off the ball.

Chelsea carry on, Sterling bundles his way into the box and from a tight angle produces the finish.

Was it handball though?

Tottenham 1-0 Chelsea

Monday 6 November 2023 20:22 , Matt Verri

19 mins: It's a yellow. Udogie is lucky, that could easily have been worse.

Sterling moved his leg away just in time, which probably saved him a serious injury and Udogie a sending off.

Tottenham 1-0 Chelsea

Monday 6 November 2023 20:21 , Matt Verri

18 mins: Udogie a bit too keen with that challenge... and it's a yellow card. He's furious.

He can't really complain, jumped in with two feet. So unnecessary. Got the ball, but it's a dangerous one on Sterling.

VAR will look at this too - possible red.

Tottenham 1-0 Chelsea

Monday 6 November 2023 20:19 , Matt Verri

16 mins: Don't want to jinx anything, but it will be absolutely miraculous if this finishes 1-0.

Spurs look like scoring with every attack, Chelsea all over the place at the back. The Blues though are carrying a threat themselves, on the rare occasion they get near the ball.

Nizaar Kinsella at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

Monday 6 November 2023 20:18 , Matt Verri

Brennan Johnson's selection has been a masterstroke. A great assist for Heung-min Son denied by a VAR call.

He has the beating of Reece James right now.

Tottenham 1-0 Chelsea

Monday 6 November 2023 20:16 , Matt Verri

13 mins: GOO... OFFSIDE!

Nearly lift-off in north London. Wonderful Spurs move, ball wide to Johnson, he plays it into the six-yard box and Son tucks it away with the first-time finish.

VAR will check, but he does look off.

Tottenham 1-0 Chelsea

Monday 6 November 2023 20:15 , Matt Verri

11 mins: Huge chance!

It should be 1-1. Porro makes a complete mess of things from a throw-in and Chelsea are away.

Jackson clean through on goal, opts not to take the shot with his left foot, chops back onto his right and Vicario makes a great save.

From the resulting corner, Disasi heads wide. More like it from Chelsea.

Dan Kilpatrick at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

Monday 6 November 2023 20:13 , Matt Verri

Sarr and Kulusevski will take the fantasy points but Spurs' goal was made by Maddison opening up the pitch with a lovely cross-field pass.

The playmaker dragged Caicedo wide and then found Sarr in acres of space.

Tottenham 1-0 Chelsea

Monday 6 November 2023 20:12 , Matt Verri

10 mins: Ten minutes played... I can barely remember Chelsea touching the ball, beyond kicking off.

Awful start, Spurs absolutely dominant and they look like they are capable of running away with this in a hurry. James has to hack the ball away as Johnson lines up a shot.

Tottenham 1-0 Chelsea

Monday 6 November 2023 20:10 , Matt Verri

8 mins: Chelsea are rocked... to put it mildly. Pinned back again straight from kick-off, they're all over the place.

Johnson with the ball across the face of goal, cleared out to Porro. Lashes the strike from the edge of the area, Sanchez saves.

Will be interesting to see if that goal stays with Kulusevski. Not 100% sure his curling strike was on target before it hit Colwill.

GOAL! Tottenham 1-0 Chelsea | Dejan Kulusevski 6'

Monday 6 November 2023 20:08 , Matt Verri

THE PERFECT START FOR SPURS!

This time Chelsea do press, and Tottenham play it all the way out from the back.

Maddison with a lovely ball to Sarr, who slides the pass wide to Kulusevski. Onto his left foot, shot takes a big deflection and bobbles past Sanchez.

Tottenham 0-0 Chelsea

Monday 6 November 2023 20:07 , Matt Verri

5 mins: Interesting battle this. Chelsea sitting off, letting Romero and Van de Ven have it. No pressure at all on the centre-backs, but they are ready to pounce when the ball gets played through the lines.

Son gets in behind, tame shot comfortably saved. Flag up, offside and wouldn't have counted.

Nizaar Kinsella at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

Monday 6 November 2023 20:05 , Matt Verri

A predictably outstanding atmosphere tonight in this London derby.

It really feels like a special occasion, albeit with a few nerves flying around.

Tottenham 0-0 Chelsea

Monday 6 November 2023 20:05 , Matt Verri

2 mins: Colwill a bit too tight on Kulusevski, drags the Spurs winger to the ground.

It's Spurs dominating possession in the early stages, Chelsea happy enough to let them have it in midfield and at the back. Gallagher tries to change that - bundles into Udogie and that's another foul.

KICK-OFF!

Monday 6 November 2023 20:02 , Matt Verri

We're underway on a huge night in north London!

Monday 6 November 2023 19:58 , Matt Verri

Premier League music so loud that it's fairly difficult to work out what kind of reception Pochettino got when he walked out.

Teams are out, handshakes done. We'll have a minutes silence ahead of kick-off, with this Spurs' final home match before Remembrance Day.

Mauricio Pochettino gets a bear hug from Ange Postecoglou upon his arrival in front of the supporters.

Not much response from the crowd to him just yet but his presence hasn't been especially highlighted yet.

Nizaar Kinsella at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

Monday 6 November 2023 19:56 , Matt Verri

There's a pretty epic World Cup-calibre light show at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium ongoing ahead of kick-off.

It is chronicling the legendary stars and their newly given 'player numbers', which Spurs have now emulated from Gareth Southgate's England team.

Man for the big occasion

Monday 6 November 2023 19:55 , Matt Verri

Brennan Johnson made his full debut against Arsenal earlier this season, and his second Spurs start now comes against Chelsea.

Only gets out of bed for the big games...

Ten minute warning!

Monday 6 November 2023 19:50 , Matt Verri

Warm-ups are done in north London.

Kick-off fast approaching - just under ten minutes until we get up and running.

Spurs to go back to the top of the table, or Chelsea to make a major statement? Not long until we find out.

Pochettino 'so happy' to see Son as captain

Monday 6 November 2023 19:46 , Matt Verri

Mauricio Pochettino has praised Ange Postecoglou’s decision to give the Tottenham captaincy to Heung-min Son.

The 31-year-old forward replaced Hugo Lloris as Spurs captain this summer, with England skipper Harry Kane having left to join Bayern Munich.

Son rose to prominence under Pochettino in north London, developing into one of the world’s best attackers as the pair built a close personal relationship.

“He’s a great professional, a great player, I’m so happy he’s the captain,” Pochettino told reporters. “People grow, people become more mature, and they are top of the table so he must be doing something good as captain.

“When people you like and love are happy and doing well, that increases your personal happiness. We are this type of people that love and enjoy when people we know and you are part of his life are doing well.”

Postecoglou explains decision to start Johnson

Monday 6 November 2023 19:40 , Matt Verri

"It is going to be a game when with both teams trying to play there will be space out there," the Spurs boss tells Sky Sports.

"Brennan's pace is great and he has had a bit of a disrupted start so I am looking forward to seeing what he can do for us.

"I think when you look at the rest of our team we have made some changes and Sonny came in the middle.

"It's just a bit of fluency and cohesion and we are working hard in training to make sure we are more potent in that final third."

Postecoglou wants rapid January business

Monday 6 November 2023 19:28 , Matt Verri

Ange Postecoglou has urged high-flying Tottenham not to leave their January transfer business to the last minute.

Spurs are expected to be busy in January, particularly if they are still in title contention, and the club's new-look recruitment team is taking shape.

Johan Lange started work as technical director on Wednesday and Rob Mackenzie will join as chief scout this week.

Asked about the appointments of Lange and Mackenzie, both poached from Aston Villa, head coach Postecoglou said: "It is important they come in now.

"The January window, like for every club, is an important one.

"My view on the January one is that if you can get your business done early in the window it certainly is more helpful because you leave it until the end of January and sometimes what you train to gain you've missed that opportunity by waiting a whole month.

"That's sometimes out of your control so having Johan in is good. I'm sure we'll have a lot of discussions between now and then and I'm looking forward to working with him."

Pochettino: I didn't choose to leave... I was sacked!

Monday 6 November 2023 19:21 , Matt Verri

Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino will "accept" being booed by Tottenham fans tonight but wanted to make clear that "we parted ways because I was sacked".

The Argentina returns to Spurs to sit in the opposition dugout for the first time since being dismissed almost exactly four years ago. The atmosphere is expected to be very heated following Pochettino's decision to join fierce rivals Chelsea.

But it is the Chelsea fans who may take umbrage with Pochettino's latest comments, as the manager took time to make sure Spurs fans know he did not want to leave the club in 2019 and suggested he could even still be in charge there.

He said: "I didn't decide to leave (Spurs). We parted ways because I was sacked.

"But it's not a criticism to the club. That is a difference, we didn't decide to leave. Maybe (we could be) still there."

Ange Postecoglou has been discussing Heung-min Son's importance to Spurs - the captain once again leads the line tonight.

Pochettino looks for Chelsea lift-off

Monday 6 November 2023 19:12 , Matt Verri

Almost exactly nine years ago, on the first weekend of November 2014, Mauricio Pochettino's Tottenham trailed Aston Villa 1-0 going into the final six minutes.

Spurs scrambled an equaliser before Harry Kane's deflected free-kick in stoppage time sealed a dramatic turnaround and changed everything for Pochettino.

The win was the turning point for the manager, kickstarting his joyful transformation of the club over the next five years.

"It meant for us, for everyone, the possibility to stay [at Spurs]," Pochettino said in 2017. "The team were playing well, but not winning games and we were a bit under pressure. Always in football, when you don't get good results, the first to be sacked is the manager..."

'Playing well but not winning games' neatly applies to Pochettino's Chelsea too and he is again under a degree of pressure as he returns to Spurs for the first time since he was sacked four years ago.

Big boost for Spurs!

Monday 6 November 2023 19:07 , Matt Verri

Udogie is fit for Tottenham and returns at left-back - Postecoglou will be hugely relieved, with Davies out.

Johnson comes into the side as Richarlison drops to the bench, and otherwise it's exactly as you'd expect. Bentancur will be hoping for more minutes off the bench in the second-half.

Palmer and James both start for Chelsea, having had injury concerns of their own. Mudryk named among the substitutes.

Jackson gets the nod to lead the line, Pochettino opting against going for a false nine.

Pochettino: I would never manage Arsenal

Monday 6 November 2023 18:50 , Matt Verri

Mauricio Pochettino has insisted he will never manage Arsenal out of respect for former club Tottenham.

It remains to be seen what kind of reception Pochettino, who was hugely popular during his five years in charge of Tottenham, gets tonight now he is in the Chelsea dugout.

In his pre-match press conference, the Argentinian was keen to emphasise the respect he still has for Spurs and the bond he has with the club, something that would prevent him from ever taking a job on the other side of north London.

"If you remember I say clubs I'll never manage was Arsenal because I considered them the worst enemy of Tottenham and Barcelona because of Espanyol," Pochettino said.

"It's strange to come back because always the feeling after four years, it's going to be, for me, a happy day but that is life and we need to move on.

"We are professional but at the same time we are human."

Postecoglou opens up on Levy relationship

Monday 6 November 2023 18:41 , Matt Verri

During his five-and-a-half years in charge of Spurs, Mauricio Pochettino spoke to Levy almost every day and they even bonded during a holiday to the coach's native Argentina, which included white-water rafting together.

Speaking at his pre-match press conference on Friday, he described his relationship with Levy as "friendly" and said the Spurs chief was one of the most important figures in his career.

Told about Pochettino's relationship with Levy and asked how his compared, Ange Postecoglou said: "Nothing against Daniel but I'm not going white-water rafting!

"My relationship with Daniel is pretty consistent with the relationships with all the people I've worked with at other clubs that have major influence as decision-makers.

"I need them to believe in me. That's the basic core of it and you can get to that space in many different ways. It doesn't mean I have to socialise with them, it doesn't mean I have to talk to them every day. It's about gaining their trust and belief."

He added: "I've had a really healthy working relationship with Daniel and hopefully I'm gaining more of his trust to continue to do what I want to do."

Son: Still close with Pochettino

Monday 6 November 2023 18:33 , Matt Verri

Heung-min Son has been full of praise for Mauricio Pochettino in his programme notes tonight, saying his former manager was "almost like my father" when at Tottenham.

That close relationship will be parked to one side tonight though.

Son writes: “We still have a good connection and he was almost like my father when he was here, but it is a big moment to have him back in the stadium where he managed the first game.

"When we play against each other it won’t be a friendship, it’ll be intense and tough.”

Palmer up front?

Monday 6 November 2023 18:23 , Matt Verri

Another decision for Pochettino is whether to start with misfiring centre-forward Nicolas Jackson or use Cole Palmer as a False 9, as against Arsenal.

Mykhailo Mudryk's return to fitness could help free up Palmer to play further forward, while Armando Broja may be fit enough for the bench.

Spurs' centre-half pairing of Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero has been imperious this season - they will back themselves against anyone.

Big selection decisions

Monday 6 November 2023 18:14 , Matt Verri

Reece James came through an hour of Chelsea's Carabao Cup win over Blackburn midweek and Mauricio Pochettino must decide if the wing-back is ready to start a game of this magnitude.

James will be a particular threat if Destiny Udogie and Ben Davies, who both face late fitness tests, are missing for Spurs, with Emerson Royal on standby to play left-back.

Ange Postecoglou must also decide between Brennan Johnson and Richarlison on the left wing.
