Tributes have been paid to former Clyde and Hamilton Accies striker Stevie Convery, who has died at the age of 52.

Convery, who passed away suddenly on Sunday, started his career in the juniors with Arthurlie, but joined Clyde in 1998 and spent five years there, during which time he helped them to win the 2000 Second Division title.

After scoring 25 goals in 139 games, Convery joined Hamilton Accies, but an injury-hit spell saw him score just four times in 32 appearances over two seasons.

Convery then returned to Arthurlie, before moving on to Beith and Neilston as a coach.

Clyde paid tribute to their former striker, saying: “All at the club are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of our former player Stevie Convery.

“Stevie joined Clyde from Arthurlie in the summer of 1998 and was part of the 1990-2000 Second Division title winning squad.

“Stevie scored a total of 25 goals in 139 appearances over five years for The Bully Wee.

“The thoughts and condolences of all at the club are with Stevie’s family and friends at this sad time.”

Hamilton Accies also paid tribute, saying: “We are saddened to learn of the sudden passing of ex-Accie Stevie Convery, 52.

“Renowned for being a Junior Cup winner with Arthurlie, he was also at Clyde; he made 32 appearances for us, with 4 goals, between 2003-05 before going back to the juniors.

“Stevie was a naturally full of life and friendly guy.

“He was popular with players and fans alike.

“His sudden death on Sunday came as a shock and our thoughts and condolences are with his family and friends at this time.”

Former team-mate Pat Keogh, who played with Convery at Clyde and Hamilton, said: “So sad to hear of the passing of former team-mate Stevie Convery, who will be sorely missed by friends and, most of all, his family. God bless Stevie.”

Funeral details will be announced in due course.
