Watford legend Troy Deeney claims he turned down a mega-bucks deal to join Ange Postecoglou's revolution at Celtic.

The former Premier League striker claims the Hoops and Middlesbrough battled it out for his signature after he called time on his remarkable 11 years at Vicarage Road. Deeney plundered 140 goals for the Hornets - including a famous stoppage-time strike against Leicester in 2013 that sent them to the Championship play-off final - in 419 games.

But after departing as a free agent in 2021, Deeney has revealed Postecoglou attempted to lure him up the road to Scotland as one of his first major signings after taking over the reins from Neil Lennon. The ex-Walsall frontman claims the Hoops tabled him a bumper £40,000-a-week deal that would've made him one of the top earners at Parkhead.

However, the Englishman spurned the opportunity to join the Hoops in favour of a move to boyhood club Birmingham City, where he signed a two-year deal for a fraction of the salary.

In an interview with podcasters Under the Cosh, he said: "I had two offers to go abroad, three offers to go abroad that were quite lucrative. I had an offer to go Middlesbrough with Neil Warnock and then Celtic came in for me as well. I was like that's mint, but it's miles away.

"Now I'm getting to the point of 34, being around the kids, oldest boy finishes this year, so he's at that point where he needs me becoming a man now. The girls need me, I'm like 'No, I'm not moving'.

"Those teams that I've just mentioned offered me nearly £40,000-a week to go there. I ended up signing for Birmingham for £12,000-a week. But I was at home."
