Victoria Park in East London will host the main fan park for Sunday’s World Cup final after Trafalgar Square was ruled out due to maintenance work.

A so-called super screening is being put on by the festival All Points East who have worked with London’s City Hall to create a base for Lionesses fans.

Trafalgar Square and Wembley, which is midway through concert seasons, were immediately ruled out as bases after England’s 3-1 victory over Australia.

Mayor of London Sadiq Khan said is statement that the screening in Victoria Park “will bring thousands of fans together to roar on the team in their biggest game yet”.

“The Lionesses’s run to the final - and hopefully to bring the World Cup home - will deliver a further massive boost to the popularity of women’s football in this country and inspire more girls and women to get involved in sport,” he added.

“The atmosphere for the screening on Sunday will be electric and I can’t wait to see Londoners come together at Victoria Park and at the many fantastic venues, bars and restaurants across London showing the final to cheer the team on to glory.”

England are attempting to make football history for the nation by winning back to back tournaments.

The FA is staying tight-lipped about potential celebrations should the Lionesses beat Spain, but a major event, probably in London, would be certain. Ongoing maintenance work rules out Trafalgar Square, but there would be likely receptions at Buckingham Palace and Downing Street.
