Vitesse vs Tottenham LIVE!

Tottenham’s decision to leave their big guns at home saw them lose 1-0 to Vitesse Arnhem in Group G of Europa Conference League.

The likes of Harry Kane, Son Heung-min, Cristiano Romero and Hugo Lloris did not travel to Holland with Sunday’s clash at West Ham in mind and a second string were undone by Maximilian Wittek’s 78th-minute strike.

Unsurprisingly given the amount of changes, Spurs were not up to much in an attacking sense in the first half, with teenage striker Dane Scarlett up against it in a lone role in attack.

They immediately showed more after the break and were within inches of taking the lead in the 47th minute. Giovani Lo Celso showed why he is becoming a key player for Argentina as he went on an enterprising dribble before laying it off for Gil, whose first-time shot rattled the crossbar.

That was as good as it got for Spurs who were pinned further and further back as the second half wore on, with Eli Dasa twice going close with efforts from distance, the second effort bringing a smart stop out of Gollini.

It was no surprise when the goal came 12 minutes from time as Wittek brilliantly volleyed home Dasa’s cross from the edge of the area to send the home crowd wild.

Elsewhere in Group G, Rennes saw out their 2-1 win at NS Mura to go clear atop the standings.

It means Spurs are third on four points, with Vitesse second on six and Rennes top on seven.

Next up in the competition, the Dutch side come to North London on November 6.

Full time! Vitesse 1-0 Tottenham

19:36 , Marc Mayo

90+4 mins: A short set play goes nowhere and is eventually acrobatically cleared. Lo Celso’s final cross is poor. That’s the game.

19:35 , Marc Mayo

90+4 mins: Lo Celso fouled. Here comes one final chance...

19:35 , Marc Mayo

90+3 mins: Dele puts the ball in and it bounces harmlessly up for the goalkeeper. Another cheer. Another minute ticks by.

19:34 , Marc Mayo

90+2 mins: The GelreDome is ready to enjoy this, cheering every lump clear as Tottenham probe for a route back into the game.

19:32 , Marc Mayo

90 mins: Sanchez intervenes as Tottenham do more defending than they’d like at this stage.

Four minutes added on.

19:31 , Marc Mayo

89 mins: Buitink’s efforts to slow Spurs down earns him a yellow card, for launching a 45-yard shot after committing a foul.

It gives the visitors the ball back but they can’t do anything with it.

19:29 , Marc Mayo

87 mins: Vitesse smartly winding down the clock now with Wittek the latest man coming off.

19:26 , Marc Mayo

84 mins: That riposte has been pretty minimal, Spurs haven’t quite given up but they aren’t far off.

Frederiksen gets a standing ovation as he is replaced by Buitink.

19:23 , Marc Mayo

81 mins: Around ten minutes for a Spurs response and Markanday shows some initiative, turning his man and earning a free-kick off Wittek, who is booked for the lunge.

19:22 , Marc Mayo

Vitesse have not created many chances but you can’t say their goal is undeserved on the balance of play. There are question marks over goalkeeper Gollini but Wittek’s fine volley did come through a crowd of players.

19:21 , Marc Mayo

78 mins: Dasa with a great eye as he stood up a cross straight to the edge of the area, where Wittek was waiting and took the volley on first time.

It may have taken a touch on the way, Gollini was well beaten.

GOAL! Vitesse 1-0 Tottenham

19:20 , Marc Mayo

77 mins: The home fans go wild! Wittek with a scorching shot from 18 yards out!

19:19 , Marc Mayo

76 mins: Dele goes on a direct run and is tracked all the way before driving a shot right into a defender, for the ball to sit up nicely and be collected by Schubert.

There is plenty of space for Tottenham to exploit, if they fancy it. Vitesse certainly do and that may prove their downfall.

19:17 , Marc Mayo

75 mins: That’ll do for Scarlett, Markanday comes on in his place.

It’s a debut for the 20-year-old, who has six goals in seven league games for the Under-23s this term.

19:16 , Marc Mayo

73 mins: Once again, the set-play is pretty average yet Spurs fail to win the second ball and another delivery comes in.

The chance is dealt with and Scarlett races towards a loose ball along with keeper Schubert - but arrives later and is booked for leaving his leg in.

19:14 , Marc Mayo

72 mins: It’s a weak ball in from Wittek but Vitesse keep the ball and have another chance to whip one in after winning a corner.

19:14 , Marc Mayo

71 mins: Second booking of the night for Tottenham, Sanchez’s name taken and Vitesse have a chance to load the box.

19:13 , Marc Mayo

70 mins: The locals sense a real chance at a famous upset here. Just 20 minutes left for what would surely be a winning goal for either side.

19:11 , Marc Mayo

68 mins: Dasa cannot help himself from basically 40 yards, and although his shot is easy for Gollini it was actually on target.

This one is getting scrappy, which maybe helps the hosts.

19:06 , Marc Mayo

64 mins: Close!

Dasa has been a threat all evening down the right and goes early to pelt at Gollini’s goal from outside the box, his effort flashing past the near-post.

19:04 , Marc Mayo

62 mins: If Tottenham are to throw themselves at getting the win, the complete lack of experienced options off the bench may prove a big hindrance.

Nuno’s options in full are: Austin, White, John, Fagan-Walcott, Clarke, Cesay, Matthew Craig, Michael Craig, Lyons-Foster, Markanday.

19:01 , Marc Mayo

59 mins: Vitesse push back up the pitch, Openda sensing a breakaway that is well snuffed out.

Dan Kilpatrick at the GelreDome

18:59 , Marc Mayo

Spurs have already looked more threatening in 10 minutes of the second-half than they did in the entire first period. Nuno, you suspect, would be fine with a draw here but Spurs are playing with more urgency since the interval.

18:58 , Marc Mayo

56 mins: A great counter-attack chance sums up Tottenham’s efforts.

Bergwijn is set clear into space, seems to run into more trouble than he needs to, and rolls a lame pass into nowhere.

18:56 , Marc Mayo

54 mins: Bergwijn down the left hooks a wayward cross towards Scarlett, which has more chance of drifting into the far corner of the net than reaching the striker.

18:53 , Marc Mayo

50 mins: Lo Celso and Scarlett both work their way into the area but cannot work the shot.

The youngster collapses in the box after getting a good fistful of his shirt, although he seems to have come off worse in the ensuing tangle. The foul goes against Scarlett for committing his fair share of tangling.

18:50 , Marc Mayo

48 mins: Vitesse are also up for this, however. An effort is drilled into a crowd and comes off Tanganga for a corner.

The same defender is there to stoop and head clear the ball in.

18:49 , Marc Mayo

47 mins: Crossbar!

Well, Tottenham have shown up! Gil lashes the crossbar with an effort from 20 yards, a sweetly-hit curled effort after a pacey attack.

Second-half begins! Vitesse 0-0 Tottenham

18:46 , Marc Mayo

The players are back out. Let’s see if anyone can find a winner...

18:40 , Marc Mayo

The BT Sports pundits are far from impressed with Tottenham at the break.

Glenn Hoddle says: “If that’s a cup final, they’re not playing like that. Why wait for the rollocking at half-time?”

Chris Sutton adds: “There’s a lot of players out there who look like they don’t want to be there.”

18:38 , Marc Mayo

In fact, there are some interesting scores at the break across the other Europa Conference League matches - the majority of which are taking place now.

Jose Mourinho’s Roma are 2-1 down in Norway to Bodo/Glimt, while Greek side PAOK lead 2-0 away to ten-man Copenhagen. In the only other game featuring a team you have definitely heard of, Feyenoord lead Union Berlin 2-1.

Elsewhere in Group G, a good game is happening. NS Mura levelled against Rennes but the French side are back in front, thanks to Laborde’s goal on the brink of half-time.

Half-time! Vitesse 0-0 Tottenham

18:31 , Marc Mayo

Not a classic.

18:31 , Marc Mayo

45 mins: One minute added on.

Dan Kilpatrick at the GelreDome

18:29 , Marc Mayo

There’s not much to get the pulse racing here but Spurs are starting to show a few signs of more invention as half-time approaches. For all of Scarlett’s inexperience, the midfield five are all full internationals and should be able to create more than they have so far.

18:29 , Marc Mayo

43 mins: Davies and Bergwijn combine well on the left before the Dutchman faces up to his defender and fires a wayward shot into the crowd.

The ball comes back down the right with Tanganga crossing nicely, with the ball cleared and a foul won by Vitesse.

18:26 , Marc Mayo

41 mins: In more game-related news... there isn’t really any.

Bergwijn is booked for dissent, after nudging back the Vitesse free-kick taker as he put the ball down for a foul in his own half.

18:25 , Marc Mayo

40 mins: It was someone’s bright idea to give the Vitesse fans yellow flags, which means every time something happens in front of the stands, they flag in a surprisingly accurate linesman-like manner. Fortunately, the referee hasn’t fallen for it yet.

18:22 , Marc Mayo

37 mins: Sanchez is the target for a free-kick from the left and the ball falls for Gil, who lofts a loose attempt over the bar. Nothing to get excited about for those visiting fans just yet.

18:21 , Marc Mayo

35 mins: The hosts are enjoying a better spell now, and as such the volume has increased in Arnhem.

18:17 , Marc Mayo

33 mins: Rasmussen has the ball poached by Lo Celso and yet the Argentine cannot pick out a man in the box.

Tottenham not quite matching their tricky first touches with an end product.

18:16 , Marc Mayo

31 mins: Don’t worry, Spurs fans. There’s been no immediate commentator’s curse after that last post.

Vitesse do come forward but one cross lofted deep is dealt with before Sanchez terminates another run down the wing with a clinical slide tackle.

18:14 , Marc Mayo

29 mins: Vitesse have only scored nine goals in nine league matches this season, while this Spurs line-up has just one league goal between them.

This hasn’t felt like a goalfest waiting to happen. So far.

18:12 , Marc Mayo

26 mins: Lo Celso puts the ball in for a flick-on that is turned behind by Wittek.

The corner is played short and cleared into a failed counter.

18:11 , Marc Mayo

25 mins: Neat footwork by Gil and an offload before he gets crunched wins a free-kick in a nice position.

18:08 , Marc Mayo

23 mins: Chance!

A Vitesse corner is perfectly aimed towards the near-post and Rasmussen touches it on, only for the ball to flash across the goalline and out. Spurs granted another escape.

Dan Kilpatrick at the GelreDome.

18:07 , Marc Mayo

Spurs are starting to enjoy more possession but they look toothless up front with 17-year-old Scarlett leading the line. Clearly he’s a big talent but you have to wonder if he’s ready for men’s football at this level.

18:06 , Marc Mayo

20 mins: Vitesse proving themselves to be very organised when facing Spurs’ slower, more patient attacks.

Elsewhere, Rennes lead Mura 1-0 in Slovenia.

 (AP)
(AP)

18:02 , Marc Mayo

17 mins: Dele breaks out on the counter and Lo Celso has a great chance to send in a runner - but picks the wrong one and a pass to Gil is easily snaffled up.

18:00 , Marc Mayo

15 mins: Covering all bases there, myself and Dan...

VAR doesn’t demand too long to check the foul and the game continues, Vitesse still on the attack.

Dan Kilpatrick at the GelreDome

17:59 , Marc Mayo

From here, it looked a generous decision not to award a penalty or free-kick against Gil for a lunge for Wittek on the 18-yard line.

Certainly the Arnhem bench and most of the GelreDome are up in arms about the call. The hosts have started the better.

17:57 , Marc Mayo

11 mins: Wittek with a frankly scandalous flop for a penalty after Gil misses the ball from a lunge in the area. Without the theatrics in might have had a shot. Osmers waves it away.

Spurs break and Bero is booked for downing Scarlett.

17:56 , Marc Mayo

10 mins: A deep cross is met by Tanganga, who under little threat opts to clear for a corner. That has the home fans back in fine voice.

The ball is high and a Dasa volley deflects for another set-piece.

17:54 , Marc Mayo

8 mins: A first proper venture forward from the visitors, a Bergwijn ball into Scarlett isn’t quite on the money. The front-four for Tottenham quite quickly put themselves in a good position for that move, which bodes well for them.

17:53 , Marc Mayo

7 mins: Gil tries to produce some flair to beat his man but finds, just like Spurs overall so far, his marker can match him.

17:48 , Marc Mayo

3 mins: Chance!

Frederiksen is picked out down the left channel of the box and Gollini has to come off his line to parry the low shot. That’s an official warning sign.

17:47 , Marc Mayo

2 mins: A busy start from the hosts, focusing on rushing Spurs straight down the middle.

Glenn Hoddle believes Steven Bergwijn provided something of a false dawn for Tottenham after a stunning debut.

The winger will be one of the players expected to perform tonight and the club favourite admits his scoring ratio, of four goals in over 50 games, isn’t good enough.

Hoddle tells BT Sport: “He’s got talent, it’s probably difficult for him because he scored a really good goal, the winner, against Manchester City on his debut. That set the standard so high.”

How Tottenham earned their first Europa Conference League win

Thomas Letsch is the man out to stop Spurs tonight, and the Vitesse boss has called on his supporters to create a big atmosphere at the GelreDome.

He said: “It’s about the mix of three elements: enjoying, fighting and following the plan. If we do this well, I am convinced that we have a chance.

“Although the focus at Spurs is mainly on the Premier League, they have a lot of quality. It is up to us to find the solutions and the spaces and to keep our defence tight. Fortunately, we have been getting the latter lately, conceding fewer goals."

Steven Bergwijn has vowed to deliver his best form for Tottenham ahead of starting tonight’s game.

The winger has only hit four goals since joining the club, with none so far this season.

He said pre-game: “I know I have more in house, but I started this season positively and well.

“Last season was difficult for me, but this season started positively and then I got the injury but I kept the confidence from the staff here and you will see the best of me soon.

“Yeah of course [injuries are frustrating] but this is life. Injuries, these things happen, but for me it’s important to stay close to myself. I know what I can [do]. I’m fit again so now it’s time to show myself again.”

Tottenham Team News

16:07 , Marc Mayo

Spurs will be without the 10 outfield players who started Sunday’s win at Newcastle who, likely along with goalkeeper Hugo Lloris, remain in London.

With Ryan Sessegnon and Matt Doherty sidelined through injury, most of Nuno’s team therefore picks itself.

The only big question for the head coach is whether to hand another start to Dane Scarlett after 17-year-old forward struggled to make an impression in his first three appearances in the competition.

Steven Bergwijn will start for Spurs for the first time since the win over Watford in August after recovering from injury.
