Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag got into a fiery argument with a journalist who questioned his tactics following their 3-0 defeat to rivals Liverpool.

United were met by boos at the full time whistle at Old Trafford after being outplayed by Arne Slot’s side after Luis Diaz’s double and a Mohamed Salah effort sealed a 3-0 defeat.

Ten Hag was defiant in his post-match press conference and hit back at a journalist who questioned whether his coaching and tactics were to blame for the performance.

“So, what do you mean? Tell me then, maybe you can explain me which mistakes we make regular?” Ten Hag replied. The reporter proceeded to list several United mishaps, which included “constantly turning over the ball in your own half, playing the ball out from the back, getting mugged, chances coming off the back of it, counter attacks where you are outnumbered, giving up endless chances.”

Ten Hag gave the reporter a chance to reel back his comments by asking if he was sure, but the journalist stood firm with a reply of “absolutely” without hesitation to which the United manager used the club’s FA Cup and Carabao Cup victories under him as examples of his tactics working fine.

“I don’t think [so] otherwise we would win trophies as we did and to beat big opponents so I am sorry for you.”

In another swipe at the Ten Hag, the journalist added: “With the greatest respect you did brilliantly against Manchester City in the final, you almost lost to Coventry in the semi-final I mean come on let’s have a realistic view of what happened.

“I think we won, after City, the most trophies in English football so I’m sorry for you,” Ten Hag hit back.

In addition to winning the FA Cup last season, United finished eighth in the Premier League and were knocked out of Europe entirely after finishing bottom of their Champions League group which included Bayern Munich, Galatasaray and Copenhagen.
