Unbeaten Exeter Chiefs and Gloucester go head-to-head in the third stage game of the 2024/25 Premiership Rugby Cup on Friday night with the prize of topping Pool E at the halfway mark in qualifying up for grabs.

Defending champions Gloucester have played a largely inexperienced side in the opening two rounds but were strong enough to beat Hartpury 31-26 and Cornish Pirates 36-28, while Chiefs have gone full noise throughout with the result being a 68-7 thumping of Pirates followed by a 54-3 home win against Hartpury.

Looking ahead to the game, Chiefs director of rugby Rob Baxter said: "I think the opening rounds of the Premiership Cup have been pretty progressive for us. Friday will be closer to a Premiership game, it will be a bit more of a test of where we are and some of the things we’re working on. Then we’ve got a huge test the following week going away to Bath.

“I can tell you what it feels like, and it feels that we’ve got a group of guys working hard. We turned up from the week off in good shape – boys didn’t come back looking like they’d had a blowout; they came back looking like they were ready to go.

“A lot of the boxes we’re looking to tick, the players are ticking so that’s very positive. We’ve just got to stick at it now. The key for us is not focusing on ‘what work has gone on’, instead it’s making sure that we keep progressing, keep confidence and keep moving forwards for an extended period.”

Cherry and Whites director of rugby George Skivington added: "We've got a tough opposition this week which is brilliant and that's kind of ideal really because we are back into the Premiership the next week. Our main focus point is we want to win this one and we want to be top of the pool going back into the Premiership. So it lines itself up nicely."
