Japan won Group E of this tournament, defeating Austira, Ghana and New Zealand to go 3-0-0 in the stage. The team then took down Nigeria, Spain and the Netherlands to advance to the final. In the semifinal win over the Netherlands, Japan won 2-0, with both goals coming from Manaka Matsukubo, who plays in the NWSL for the North Carolina Courage.

Korea DPR has also won all its matches, winning Group F over Argentina, Costa Rica and the Netherlands. From there, the team defeated Austria, Brazil and the United States in the knockout phase. Choe Il-son scored the lone goal in a 1-0 semifinals win over the USA.
