Competition has already begun at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, but the start of the Summer Games becomes "official" at the opening ceremony on Friday.

The ceremony kicks off with the Parade of Nations, a procession which will feature delegations from over 200 participating countries. This year's parade will not take place in a stadium or arena but down the Seine, the river that runs through Paris.

The city's plan to host the parade on the river marks the first time in the history of the Summer Games that the Olympics Opening Ceremony won't be held in a stadium. The trailblazing method will give hundreds of thousands of people the opportunity to witness the ceremony in-person rather than limiting the crowd to the capacity of an arena.
