Wayne Rooney was grateful for the reception he received on his return to Derby County and admitted heading into the away dugout as Plymouth manager was a "strange" experience.

Rooney received a warm ovation in recognition of his efforts during his time in charge of Derby two years ago before he left in the summer of 2022.

It was the former Manchester United striker's first job in management but came during the darkest chapter in their history which saw Derby plunged into administration. But Rooney fostered a terrific spirit despite off-field events dominating the headlines but decided enough was enough after they were relegated from the Championship.

He is now in charge of Plymouth who fought back to claim a draw against Paul Warne's side when Adam Randell's free-kick cancelled out Jerry Yates' stunning opener.

But asked about how it felt to be back at Derby, Rooney said: "It was strange. Going to the away dugout was strange as well. I was very thankful to the fans for giving me a good reception getting off the bus and at the end of the game.

"I had some great memories of the club during the most difficult period in their history. I am grateful to the club for giving me the chance to go into management and finishing my playing career here as well.

"I am sure the fans know that in the time I was here I did everything I could to keep the club sustained if you like. There was a mutual respect between me and the fans and I wish them all the best moving forward."
