Welsh sides are reportedly ramping up their efforts to sign a highly-rated 6ft 6in centre who has emerged as a target for both Warren Gatland and England coach Steve Borthwick.

Exeter Chiefs star Zack Wimbush, who was born in Hong Kong, qualifies through Wales through his mother's side of the family, with the relevant paperwork proving that fact coming through earlier this year. However, the 21-year-old is also eligible to play for England with many expecting another tug-of-war between the two nations to land the talented centre.

In September, WalesOnline reported that Gatland is very keen to bring Wimbush into the Wales fold, with Cardiff, Dragons and the Scarlets all targeting the 112kg star as a new signing for next season. Now, it is being reported by RugbyPass that the regions are "stepping up their attempts" to sign the youngster.

The report adds that while Exeter are keen to keep hold of him beyond the end of next season, that will ultimately depend on where Wimbush sees his international future, which "could be settled in the very near future".

An explosive ball carrier, Wimbush has the size and physicality to make a real impact on the international stage, having made the second highest metres post-contact in all four major domestic competitions in world rugby - United Rugby Championship, Gallagher Premiership, Top 14 and Super Rugby Pacific - last season.

While the likes of Max Llewellyn and Eddie James are being tipped to bring some power to a Welsh midfield that is yet to find a winning combination since last year's World Cup, and the likes of Louie Hennessey and Bryn Bradley set for a breakthrough, Gatland will want another physical option at centre - with Wimbush seemingly fitting the bill.

The Wales boss will also be keen not to lose another talented player to England after Cardiff-born Immanuel Feyi-Waboso chose to represent England over the country of his birth ahead of this year's Six Nations.
