David Artell is focused on the bigger picture at Grimsby Town, with his perspective on the team’s progress not affected by isolated results.

While supporters will often react to things game-by-game and have their opinions swung back and forth over the course of a topsy-turvy season, the head coach needs to have a calmer perspective.

Through wins and losses this term, of which there has been an equal measure so far, that coaching perspective is more likely to be influenced by performances rather than results at this stage.

The Mariners have shown progress in some areas of their play from the previous campaign but are still finding their feet in others, and Artell has acknowledged that fact.

There have been resilient away performances followed by vulnerable home displays, with fluid football played in some and not in others, so it is hard to get an accurate read on Town at the moment.

Artell can not afford to be unsure in his role, so the road ahead is clear from his perspective as he relayed what he sees as the next steps for his team in the coming weeks and months.

“We’ve got to make sure that we see the bigger picture,” professed Artell. “We’re still nowhere near where we need to be, and we know that, but you can’t fault anyone for that, players or staff.

“We’re working hard to try and make it happen, and that will continue for the rest of the season. That is not to say there is a limit to where we can get to this season, but we’re a whole year behind some teams in this league in terms of development time.

“We know where we are on our journey, and as long as we keep improving, we’ve had moments in games where we have been by far the better team, so it is about continuing and prolonging that control in games.

“As a by-product of that control, we will create and score more, and we won’t be on the end of these poor results whether it is home or away. There are instances where we can fail better, which I know is a contradiction of terms, but it is part of our evolutionary process.

“We can score more without necessarily creating more than we have done, but we need to be defensively solid no matter what to be hard to beat, which we have shown we can do.”
