With Erik ten Hag finally paying the price for his underwhelming spell at Old Trafford, Manchester United could well turn their attentions to a manager Liverpool passed on months ago.

Ten Hag was fired as United manager on Monday following the team's 2-1 defeat at West Ham - a fourth defeat already this season in just nine league games. The Dutchman leaves the club languishing in 14th, just a few months after signing a new contract.

The decision comes after a turbulent couple of years under Ten Hag for Liverpool’s rival. Despite winning two trophies under his leadership, questions were constantly asked about United’s style – or lack thereof – while he broke a number of unwanted records, having led the team to its worst ever finish in the Premier League last season.

Ruud van Nistelrooy will take interim charge, with no indication yet as to who could get the job full-time. One familiar name has been touted though.

Ruben Amorim is among the early favorites for the job. Liverpool fans will no doubt recognize that name, with the Reds having been strongly linked with the Sporting CP boss during their search for Jurgen Klopp’s successor.

In fact, the 39-year-old was the favorite for the Anfield job at one point after Xabi Alonso had ruled himself out of the running. Liverpool though chose to go in a different direction, appointing Arne Slot in a decision that, so far, has proven to be a masterstroke.

According to Sky Sports journalist Melissa Reddy, there were two major reasons why Amorim was ultimately not considered for the Liverpool job. It's claimed his playing philosophy wasn't the right fit for the Reds - in particular his use of a back three - nor was his long-term vision. Liverpool wants the same playing style throughout all age groups.

Liverpool.com says: United would be wise to take this into account when they’re appointing their next manager. Then again, they haven’t shown any wisdom for a good while, so why start now?

Liverpool made a decision that suited the whole club when it decided to pass on Amorim and appoint Slot. United needs to work out how it can do that, which will be tricky given the state Ten Hag has left them in.
