Wimbledon 2023 LIVE: Andy Murray defeated in five-set epic as Novak Djokovic beats curfew
Andy Murray is out of Wimbledon after Stefanos Tsitsipas battled from two sets to one down to win a two-day epic on Centre Court.
Murray was a set away from reaching the third round on Thursday night when the match was suspended at 10:40pm due to the Wimbledon curfew.
The fourth set was close when the contest resumed on Friday afternoon and went to a tiebreak, which Tsitsipas edged to level the match and force the decider.
The fifth seed then broke Murray early in the fifth and held serve to close out a 7-6 6-7 4-6 7-6 6-4 win in four hours and 40 minutes of total play.
The defeat will be crushing for Murray after the 36-year-old stood a set away from victory, but Tsitsipas proved too strong once the match resumed. Follow live updates, scores and results from SW19 below.

The moment Andy Murray’s Wimbledon comeback slipped away
Friday 7 July 2023 20:31 , Jamie Braidwood
Andy Murray slumped into the press conference room at Wimbledon, dumping his bags by his feet and lowering his stiff and weary body into a chair. Before shuffling across the stage, Murray believed he had been edged out by Stefanos Tsitsipas in a battle that could have gone either way. After resuming their contest on Friday afternoon, Tsitsipas didn’t allow Murray any break-point chances, raising his level in the fourth-set tiebreak and then again at the start of the fifth. Murray competed until the end, but the fifth seed ultimately showed his class as he denied the Briton a famous comeback.
The disappointment of exiting Wimbledon gets tougher every year Murray gets older. The chances are running out and this will hurt more than most because of how close he came. The 36-year-old had the momentum and stood a set away from the third round on Thursday night, when play was suspended due to the 11pm Wimbledon curfew. He returned in the blazing sunshine on Centre Court exactly ten years to the day since his first Wimbedon title, looking to recreate the magic from a decade ago.
Centre Court was febrile, expectant, ready to break out into the frenzy of the night before. At 4-4 in the fourth set, Murray was beginning to crackle and fire the crowd into life, holding his serve comfortably and pumping his fist as he sensed the opportunity. A forehand winner set up 15-30 against the Tsitsipas serve and, on the following point, Murray took aim at a short, sharp backhand return. Centre Court roared, but the ball was called out. It had missed the line by inches, or so Murray assumed. He didn’t know it, but the ball actually landed in

Andy Murray reveals future Wimbledon plans after Stefanos Tsitsipas defeat
Friday 7 July 2023 20:22 , Jamie Braidwood
A devastated Andy Murray was left questioning his motivation to keep going after Stefanos Tsitsipas fought back to win their delayed second-round clash on Centre Court.
The Scot was two sets to one up overnight after the 11pm curfew came into play but he was unable to complete the job, with fifth seed Tsitsipas battling to a 7-6 (3) 6-7 (2) 4-6 7-6 (3) 6-4 victory.
It was a hugely disappointing way for Murray to mark the 10th anniversary of his career-defining first Wimbledon title, and he is all too aware that his chances for another deep run here are ebbing away.

Friday 7 July 2023 22:47 , Jamie Braidwood
Game, set and match! Novak Djokovic 6-3 6-1 7-6 Stan Wawrinka
Too good from Djokovic, but Wawrinka came mighty close to taking a set there. The Swiss did not serve well enough until the third but he made it competitive in the end. However Djokovic remains untroubled at Wimbledon and moves into the fourth round, extending his winning streak at SW19 to 31 matches.
He also beats the 11pm curfew.
Djokovic: “It’s amazing what Stan is still doing at his age... after the surgeries.”
The crowd starts laughing, Djokovic replies: “What’s the problem? We’re two old guys!”
“It’s inspiring,” he continues. “Like Andy, he dropped in the rankings. We’re had some great battles. He’s a really nice guy and I wish him all the best.
“He was two points away from extending the match to another day. We knew it was going to be really tight to finish the match today. We knew it was going to have to be straight sets and I started well.”
Another impressive outing from Djokovic. “Hopefully I keep on playing better and better,” he says. “I’ve got another couple of gears to find.”
Hubert Hurkacz is next for Djokovic in the fourth round.

Djokovic takes the first set with the lob! It’s been an entertaining opener, but Djokovic has not been troubled on his serve and it’s just that one break that does it. Wawrinka has been limited to just three winners, as that’s just the level of Djokovic against a baseline hitter - especially.

Iga Swiatek overcame a late start and the lack of a Centre Court crowd to progress into the fourth round of Wimbledon with a straight-sets win over Petra Martic.
Swiatek had been scheduled to play second on the biggest venue at the All England Club on Friday, but Andy Murray’s unfinished match with Stefanos Tsitsipas had to be squeezed in before she did battle with the 30th seed.
By the time Swiatek walked out just before 6.30pm, the majority of the crowd had exited following Murray’s five-set defeat.
But the world number one showed why she is a four-time grand-slam champion with a professional display in a 6-2 7-5 victory that equals her best showing in SW19.

Denis Shapovalov def. Liam Broady 4-6 6-2 7-5 7-5
Liam Broady’s impressive Wimbledon journey is over after he was beaten in the third round by Denis Shapovalov.
The British number five enjoyed a dream Centre Court victory over fourth seed Casper Ruud on Thursday but he was unable to produce another shock, going down 4-6 6-2 7-5 7-5.
The defeat ended British interest in the men’s singles as Broady followed Andy Murray and Cameron Norrie out on a chastening afternoon for the male home players.
He will perhaps have some regrets as he served to go two sets to one up against Shapovalov, but will leave the tournament feeling proud of his efforts as the British man who got the furthest.
He matched his best performance at a grand slam and the £131,000 payday and rankings boost will make a tangible difference to his career, starting with the prospect of him making the US Open main draw next month.

Andy Murray 6-7, 7-6, 6-4, 6-6 (2-1) Stefanos Tsitsipas*
Stefanos Tsitsipas takes the first point with wonderful cross court forehand and he gives it the old fist pump to celebrate. From Murray’s serve he immediately draws level.
A nervous rally follows as Murray misses his first serve. An attempted lob from Tsitsipas is poor and Murray smashes it back to move ahead.

Cameron Norrie 3-6, 6-3, 2-6, 2-2 Christopher Eubanks*
A huge sigh of relief over on Court 1. Cameron Norrie faces a break point that, if not terminal for his chances in this match certainly would have put him seriously up against it were he to lose it, but digs out a forehand winner down the line.
He goes on to hold and we’re still on serve in this fourth set. The crowd starting to get more pumped up now.

Andy Murray 6-7, 7-6, 6-4, 6-6 Stefanos Tsitsipas*
Oh that’s a lovely backhand from Murray. He’s forced behind the baseline and nails a two-hander down the line to claim the point. Murray follows up with an equally good passing winner which goes by Tsitsipas as he comes to the net, this one coming from the forehand.
A second serve with bounce and spin is skewed out of play to send Murray 40-0 up and he forces a tiebreak with a cracking serve down the T.
Here we go.

*Andy Murray 6-7, 7-6, 6-4, 5-6 Stefanos Tsitsipas
Tsitsipas sends a serve straight down the T and clips the line which makes the ball bounce awkwardly. Murray gets his timing wrong as a result and hooks his return wide.
The Greek is controlled enough to land his first serves and despite giving away a point manages to hold serve and increase the pressure on Murray.
The Brit needs to hold here to force a tiebreak.

Friday 7 July 2023 17:15 , Mike Jones
Andy Murray 6-7, 7-6, 6-4, 5-5 Stefanos Tsitsipas*
The new balls come out for this important service game. Murray lands the first serve but misses his attempted drop shot and gives away the point. Tsitsipas then pumps a backhand over the back and gives Murray a foothold.
A cross court forehand lands right in the back corner forcing Tsitsipas into a difficult return. The ball lands in the middle of the court and Murry chips it over on the half-volley to win another point.
He’s up to 40-15 in a flash and holds serve thanks to a forehand from Tsitsipas that hits the tape. This is another tense set.

SET TO EUBANKS! Cameron Norrie 3-6, 6-3, 2-6 Christopher Eubanks
Bad news from Court No 1 for Cam Norrie. He’s broken for a second time and Eubanks takes the third set 6-2. He’s now one set from the third round of a grand slam for the first time in his career.
Does Norrie have enough left to pull off a comeback?

Friday 7 July 2023 17:09 , Mike Jones
*Andy Murray 6-7, 7-6, 6-4, 4-5 Stefanos Tsitsipas
Oh may days. At 15-15 Tsitsipas serves out wide to Murray’s forehand. The Brit reaches then whips his wrists at the ball, nailing it back across court and getting the ball to drop right in the corner to win the point. What a shot.
That momentum is halted by a loose shot from Murray who knocks one out of play - hawkeye shows the ball was in fact in though Murray didn’t challenge.
An ace takes Tsitsipas within one point of taking the game but Murray levels! Deuce.
It’s nice play from the Greek though who powers a forehand to the left corner, sends Murray sprinting across court then follows up with a slice volley to move to advantage. He holds when Murray fails to get back a drop shot.
Murray has to hold serve or he’ll lose the fourth set.

Friday 7 July 2023 17:05 , Mike Jones
Andy Murray 6-7, 7-6, 6-4, 4-4 Stefanos Tsitsipas*
Tsitsipas doesn’t put a lot of spin on his drop shots which helps Murray get up to the ball. Murray dinks his own return over the net and wins the first two points of the next game.
Tsitsipas belts a backhand down the line and curls it out of play to leave Murray in a strong position to hold. He does.
Murray sprints up to the net and slices a volley into the opposite side of court. No breaks of serve yet in this set.

Norrie gets a sniff of the Eubanks serve at 4-2 but can’t quite force a break point and the American yelps with delight as he secures the hold. He’s now 5-2 up and just a game away from winning this third set - plenty to think about for the current British No 1.

*Andy Murray 6-7, 7-6, 6-4, 3-4 Stefanos Tsitsipas
Tsitsipas pulls out a serve and volley to win the first point of his next service game and may be starting to think outside the box with how to best Murray. A first double fault of the match then brings the Brit back on level terms.
Tsitsipas falls back onto his tried and tested inside out forehand but punts it too long and the door is open for Murray. Tsitsipas closes it again with a wonderful shot out wide but following up with a volley at the net to leave things level at 30-30.
From here the Greek rattles through the next two points and takes the game.

Andy Murray 6-7, 7-6, 6-4, 3-3 Stefanos Tsitsipas*
Still on serve in the fourth set as Andy Murray gets the sixth game underway. The noise levels on Centre Court haven’t quite matched those from last night as Murray has found himself well in the set through these early stages.
Tsitsipas sends one wide to give Murray the first point of the game then decides to switch things up with a drop shot. Murray sprints up the court and flicks the ball down the line with Tsitsipas unable to return. 30-0.
There’s an intake of nervous breaths when Murray knocks the ball out of play in the next rally but the cheers follow thanks to a serve that the Greek cannot return.
Murray holds to 15 and the fourth set remains all square.

*Andy Murray 6-7, 7-6, 6-4, 2-3 Stefanos Tsitsipas
Tsitsipas launches a fine forehand winner, Murray barely moves, the Greek is taking risks still.
He’s conjuring angles that blow your mind, the in-to-out forehand from one corner to the other, stunning. 30-30. That’s 58 winners in this match for No.5 seed, six in the fourth set so far.
Now a game of patience, and Murray wins it, forcing the error to bring up deuce. It’s a solid hold in the end, the players change ends and take a drink.

Andy Murray 6-7, 7-6, 6-4, 2-2 Stefanos Tsitsipas*
A little breeze swirls around Centre Court, another variable in this second-round match.
Really smart tennis from Murray to coast into the net and put away the backhand volley into the empty side of the court. Lovely variety.
And again, mixing it up, Tsitsipas desperate for a slug fest from the back of the court, but the Scot won’t allow him, a tidy volley moves him to game point.
Explosive from Tsitsipas and Murray’s scrambling, the most delicate drop shot at the net sees Murray pegged back to deuce. A booming first serve then gives the two-time champion game point.
Just as Tsitsipas is getting on top, Murray grinds it out, two games apiece.

Andy Murray 6-7, 7-6, 6-4, 1-1 Stefanos Tsitsipas*
A first test for the Briton then, the crowd is electric on a Centre Court baked in sunshine.
Some boos from the crowd, Tsitsipas is moaning to the umpire. Not a good look. “If the ball is out, it’s a really bad call from you! It’s out 100 per cent.”
It was out, but Murray takes no notice and closes out, we’re level again.

SET! Cameron Norrie 3-6, 6-3 Christopher Eubanks*
A deep backhand to open things up wins Eubanks the first point but Norrie battles on and moves to 30-15 before a well-disguised cross-court backhand volley from Eubanks puts the pressure on at 30-30!
But it’s set point to Norrie as a forehand creeps over the net. SAVED! Thunderous forehand from Eubanks, which survives a challenge, clips the back of the line to bring up deuce but he promptly goes long for a second set point. And this time, NORRIE TAKES IT TO WIN THE SECOND SET! A forehand winner and we’re level at a set apiece.

Some early drama with a Tsitsipas challenge, the Green moves up 30-15.

Not exactly the simple consolidation of the break that Norrie would have hoped for as he comes under pressure at 30-30 and after possibly the best point of the match, a Eubanks backhand down the line for a winner brings up deuce.
Norrie then nets and suddenly he faces a break point. But it’s SAVED! However, a second break point is soon brought up but again, Eubanks nets and it’s SAVED!
And finally, the Brit sees out the game as his opponent goes long. Hard work but a vital hold!

Can Norrie come to terms with the Eubanks serve? He makes a good start here as he quickly moves to 0-30, although a net cord on a Eubanks forehand helps him eliminate that deficit.
A double fault, the first of the match, ensures deuce and a powerful Norrie forehand means a first break point of the match for the Brit. A fist pump demonstrates how big that was. And then an even bigger “come on” as Eubanks finds the net and Norrie has a BREAK OF SERVE!

Eubanks then works the game to 15-30 but a “come on” from Norrie when his opponent goes long shows how big the next point is.
