Yankees place Jazz Chisholm Jr. on IL, promote Oswald Peraza and DFA Enyel De Los Santos

CHICAGO — As expected, Jazz Chisholm Jr. will be sidelined for a bit.

The New York Yankees placed the third baseman on the 10-day injured list with what the team is calling a left elbow sprain on Wednesday. The move is retroactive to August 13.

Chisholm injured his elbow while sliding head-first into home plate during Monday’s loss to the White Sox. On Tuesday, Aaron Boone said that Chisholm had suffered an ulnar collateral ligament injury, but the severity was not known.

Boone said that remained the case on Wednesday, but Chisholm has been shut down from baseball activities.

“We’re waiting for people to still weigh in on it today,” Boone said. “So we’ll see moving forward. I can tell you Jazz is pretty encouraged in how he’s feeling and stuff. So hopefully that’s a good sign.”

The manager added that Chisholm was going through treatment and range of motion testing on Wednesday. Boone is “somewhat optimistic” that Chisholm won’t miss too much time, but he didn’t know when the lefty swinger and righty thrower would pick up a bat again.

“I know in his mind, he feels like he could right now,” Boone said.

Chisholm has had a huge impact on the Yankees in his short time with the team. In addition to learning third base on the fly, he’s hit seven home runs to go with 11 RBI and a .316/.361/.702 slash line in 14 games since being traded from the Marlins.

“He’s been a dynamic player for us,” Boone said. “He’s provided power, speed. He’s done a great job on defense. He’s been great in our room. Hopefully it’s something that doesn’t turn out to be too long and we can get him back.”

Chisholm said Monday that he was not “super concerned” about the injury, but the Yankees now have to use alternative options at third base with their biggest trade deadline acquisition on the shelf.

Oswaldo Cabrera and DJ LeMahieu are among those options, and the club promoted Oswald Peraza in a corresponding move for Chisholm. The 24-year-old Peraza hit .304/.398/.588 with seven homers and 20 RBI over his last 27 minor league games following a spring training shoulder injury and a poor start to his season.

“He’s really put together a nice month down there in Triple-A,” Boone said, noting that Peraza could be used against lefties. “Really started to play well. We know about his talent, so it’s been good to see him really start to get some traction going down there. Hopefully he can come up here and take advantage of some opportunities.”

Added Peraza: “You go through the injury, you heal, you get back on the field, but now it’s kind of like you’re starting from zero again. So definitely a different kind of pace to the season. But I worked really hard, and definitely the last month, I felt back to where I needed to be.”

Jon Berti could also be an option at third in the coming weeks. On Tuesday, Boone said that Berti (calf) could start a rehab assignment in the next week or so.

Chisholm wasn’t the Yankees’ only pre-trade deadline acquisition to receive bad news on Wednesday, as the team designated Enyel De Los Santos for assignment.

The right-handed reliever, acquired from the Padres, had a 14.21 ERA in 6 1/3 innings for the Yankees. He allowed eight hits and seven earned runs over 1 2/3 innings in Monday’s game.

Regarding the factors that led to cutting De Los Santos, Boone mentioned the bullpen being short, the Yankees’ recent doubleheaders and needing a starter because the team didn’t feel Wednesday could be a bullpen day.

“Tough call,” Boone said. “Feel like he’s better than certainly the last couple results he’s had where he’s had a tough couple outings.”

In another expected and corresponding move, the Yankees promoted Will Warren to start Wednesday’s series finale in Chicago.

Peraza’s Toe Tap

Asked about his recent surge at the plate, Peraza said that he went back to using a toe tap over two weeks ago. That has put him in a more comfortable position to hit.

He started going back to the toe tap in two-strike counts for a couple games. He hit a few homers in the process, so now it’s a full-time part of his swing again.

“He’s worked really hard on his load to just put himself behind the ball better,” Triple-A hitting coach Trevor Amicone told the Daily News. “He’s seeing the ball better and able to produce better ball fight. So just cutting a lot of fat out of his move to the ball has been big for him.”

Peraza also said that getting his confidence back has been key after he hit .205 over his first 44 games this year. Now he’s getting another big league opportunity with a club that hasn’t shown much faith in him over the last two seasons.

“It’s great to be back here with this ballclub,” Peraza said. “I’ve been working very hard in Triple-A and waiting for the opportunity. To be here, I just want to help any way possible, any way I can contribute.”

The Other Deadline Move

With Chisholm on the IL and De Los Santos DFA’d, Mark Leiter Jr. is the only active member of the Yankees’ trade deadline haul. The former Cub hasn’t been particularly good, recording a 6.14 ERA in 7 1/3 innings. However, all four of the runs he’s allowed as a Yankee have come in his last two appearances.

“Nothing I’m too concerned with,” Boone said, noting that the effectiveness of Leiter’s splitter has varied. “I still view him as playing a real significant role for us.”

The Yankees added Leiter to an unreliable bullpen because of his strikeout stuff, which he’s displayed. However, with him not being sharp lately and De Los Santos cut, it’s fair to wonder if the Yankees did enough to address a problematic bullpen.

Pitchers Progressing

Clarke Schmidt (lat) threw his latest live batting practice session on Wednesday. All went well, according to Boone. The manager believes Schmidt’s next step is to throw another live BP session, which will allow him to stay on a four-day schedule and build his pitch count more aggressively.

Lou Trivino (Tommy John surgery/elbow inflammation) began a rehab assignment at Double-A Somerset on Wednesday. Boone hopes he can be an option for the bullpen despite not pitching since 2022.

Finally, Cody Poteet (triceps) will throw his next live BP session on Thursday.
