Liverpool sent Trent Alexander-Arnold warning and told two summer priorities

Trent Alexander-Arnold will enter the final year of his contract at Liverpool this summer

Daniel Sturridge has urged Liverpool to tie Trent Alexander-Arnold down to a new contract soon. The former striker believes the academy graduate’s future should be the club’s biggest priority.

Alexander-Arnold is one of three players who will be entering the final year of his contract this summer. Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah also have just over 12 months remaining on their deals.

There has been much speculation over the future of Salah, with interest from Saudi Arabia expected to arrive again this summer. Van Dijk has also raised questions over his future, having previously admitted he doesn’t know whether he will be part of the club’s plans after Jürgen Klopp’s departure.

Sturridge though believes Alexander-Arnold’s future is the more pressing matter. The former Reds forward warned the club it can’t afford to let the 25-year-old depart at any cost.

"That's a tough one, because I think all the top clubs around Europe are going to be sniffing. Then you've got Liverpool, who, I think they've got to do everything in their power to get him [Alexander-Arnold] to sign on a dotted line," Sturridge told Sky Sports.

"You can't lose a man of Trent, you know, he's from the city. You're talking guys like Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher, who have represented one club and I think that's what you kind of want for Trent.

"Of course, Mo [Salah] and Virg [Van Dijk], they're guys that, you know, they've brought in. They've been absolutely world class for the football club. But the local lad in Trent who's become a superstar at the football clubs, he's the one that you want to make sure."

Fellow pundit Jamie Redknapp added: "The one thing is, when you look at the contract situation, there are players that have got like, obviously Trent and Virgil Van Dijk they've only got a year left of their contract. I think I won't be surprised if Mo Salah goes in the summer.

"I can see that now he's 32 in June. I wouldn't be surprised if, and I think with Liverpool, maybe getting the money, the right money, and they're not going to say they're going to sell him. I could just see looked like he was going to go last year." says: Liverpool simply has to get Alexander-Arnold to sign a new deal. As big a miss Salah and Van Dijk would be if they left, the reasons for letting them go would at least be understandable given they’re both the wrong side of 30.

Alexander-Arnold though is approaching his peak years, and it’s been clear for a long time just how special a player he is. Liverpool cannot afford to let a player like that run down his contract.
